Latest iteration of hugely popular smartphone doubles initial 4S sales in 24 hours
Apple’s iPhone 5 has garnered more than two million pre-orders in just 24 hours of going on sale.
The number of pre-orders has smashed the previous iPhone sales record of one million held by the 4S.
Apple said that demand had exceeded initial supply for the iPhone 5, and whilst a “majority” of the smartphones would be delivered on September 21st, a number of deliveries had been scheduled for October instead.
“iPhone 5 pre-orders have shattered the previous record held by iPhone 4S and the customer response to iPhone 5 has been phenomenal,” said Apple senior VP of worldwide marketing Philip Schiller.
“iPhone 5 is the best iPhone yet, the most beautiful product we’ve ever made, and we hope customers love it as much as we do.”
Announced last week, the iPhone 5 features a new thinner design, a larger screen with a 4-inch retina display, an A6 chip and the new iOS 6.
The latest iteration of Apple’s hugely popular smartphone is set to release on September 21st.
...reinforcing Apple's piss-poor design decisions on this phone. First and foremost, there's the non-standard "Lightning" connector which requires users to buy a $19-39 cable or adapter to make it work with any of their existing docs, cables, car stereos, etc. Then there's the "why bother" non-HD display, which is just different enough to not work with any existing 4-series case, and likely a number of docks or accessories designed around the old size. Those not in the US apparently have to order an LTE model specific to their carrier, which kills carrier portability. Then there's still the ever-present & ever-overpriced $100 storage increments, when an industry-standard MicroSD card would suffice.
So far, I've had a 3G, 4, and 4S, but I'll be giving this one a wide berth until the cable/adapter issues are resolved at the very least. Multiple device households will require multiple overpriced adapters to accommodate the mix of old and new. Current iDevice cables and adapters can be had at significantly lower costs, straight from China.
Apple's been making some very anti-consumer products of late, starting with this year's MBP & Air updates which all but prevent any end-user RAM, storage, or battery upgrades/replacements.
