Windows GM referring to Autumn update for 360, claims Microsoft

New Xbox reveal was a ‘misunderstanding’

Microsoft has played down claims made by its Windows GM that a new Xbox is underway by claiming the recent reveal was a misunderstanding.

Brian Hall recently referenced the long-rumoured Xbox 720 during an interview with the Verge, stating it would be coming as part of a new wave of products including Windows 8 and Windows Phone.

But a statement from Microsoft has now called the following reports a misunderstanding, and that Hall actually referred to the upcoming Xbox 360 update and a host of new features coming to the console, such as SmartGlass, Games on Windows 8 and Xbox Music.

"The comments to The Verge were not understood in their intended context," read the statement.

"When Brian mentioned a ‘new wave of products,’ he was referring to the full lineup of products coming later this year from Microsoft, including Windows 8, Office, Windows Phone and of course our fall Xbox update which will bring a host of new consumer experiences like Xbox Music, Videos, Games on Windows 8 and Xbox SmartGlass."

Despite the company’s backtracking, Microsoft is widely believed to be working on a next-generation console, with a number of developers confirming in a recent report that a leaked Xbox 720 devkit was genuine.
