Crowdfunding campaign gathers momentum for headset and devkit

Virtual reality kickstarter Oculus surpasses $1m

The Oculus Rift Kickstarter campaign has passed the $1 million mark, garnering support from both developers and consumers alike for the virtual reality headset.

Launched only this week, the project reached its $250,000 goal in a matter of hours, and received a $10,000 contribution from Minecraft creator Marcus "Notch" Persson.

The design team is headed by Palmer Luckey, and the product has shown such promise as to win accolades from industry Luminaries such as John Carmack, Gabe Newell, and Cliff Bleszinski.

Virtual reality has been something of a holy grail for hardware designers, but lag, low field of vision, and high cost have proven to be obstacles too great for most existing solutions.

But Luckey claims the Rift has cleared these hurdles with room to spare.

"It looks incredibly exciting, if anybody’s going to tackle this set of hard problems, we think that Palmer’s going to do it,” said Newell.

With 28 days remaining on the clock, the campaign has 4,500 backers contributing more than $1.1 million.
