THQ: We've got to execute flawlessly

'There's an opportunity for core games that are not just made with the highest budgets', says Brian Farrell

THQ will have to execute its planned restructure flawlessly to keep the beleaguered publisher afloat, the company’s CEO has said.

Speaking to Gamasutra, Brian Farrell said that the company did not have much room to manoeuvre due to its precarious position financially and that core games would be its focus going forward.

He however stated that this did not necessarily mean the publisher would be focusing solely on triple-A console titles, and had its sights set on various platforms.

"I think there's a real opportunity in the changing business models we see happening in the marketplace for a smaller and more agile company like us to position ourselves quite differently," said Farrell.

"We think there's a real opportunity - particularly in the digital space on the core gamer side, especially on emerging platforms like the PC and some of the things we see coming down the road, where there's an opportunity for core games that are not just made with the highest budgets, but offer alternate pricing and business models There's a place to attract the core gamer there."

Over the last year, THQ has been forced into sweeping layoffs as it turned to a core games focus after suffering from poor sales in other markets, such as its uDraw tablet.

Frog on a log!

I am concerned that we are seeing a lot of 'puff pieces' not aimed at us readers - but hoping to influence indirectly the stocks and shares side of their business. Claiming lots but really just being smoke and mirrors on a sinking ship.

The fundamental fact is that management was dropped into the company replacing previous incumbent, the new ones claimed lots and failed to deliver (Homefront!!) - they were linked to the top management and so all have to take responsibility for the failure. They should be replaced in turn and a more appropriate direction be taken.

But in reality - these executives are like frogs on a log - they will not let go, and they will do anything to hype and secure their position - claiming to be essential to future profits. The investors see this and abandon the company - so leaving the player / customer with a imploding company and a hype filled future game proposals.

I just wonder if it is not the media's job to be more critical of what it reports - rather than just being a soapbox for executive commentary - should you be more observational, and critical of what is being said? Or will you become worse than useless (maybe explaining why these Comment sections are now added for real people to say what the journos feel they can not? Due to being indirectly supported by adverts from those very corporations>>>>>>)

I agree, Farell has been pumping out this nonsense for about 5 years ever since the company went into free fall. He doesn't have a clue. I hate to read this fluff! Why does a failed business man get so much free advertising space?
