Fantasy RPG ships more than one million copies as new IP becomes 'major Capcom franchise'

Capcom is to develop a sequel to fantasy RPG Dragon’s Dogma as the game becomes a “major franchise” for the studio, it has revealed.

The publisher revealed that the title had shipped more than one million copies since its release last month, the 55th Capcom game to surpass the landmark.

Dragon's Dogma also became the fastest selling new IP in the last decade in Japan, selling 302,040 copies in its first week.

The company stated it hoped the title would become “another pillar of earnings” alongside title’s such as Monster Hunter, and that the game was set to be a “major franchise” for the studio.

...they really should stop comparing it to Monster Hunter in the West - that series didn't do massively well, and Dragon's Dogma is so different. I had heard it compared to Monster Hunter so much before it's release that I was seriously shocked to find out it was an open-world game more akin to a friendlier Dark Souls.

This is awesome news. Dragon’s Dogma deserves it. It’s been one of my best gaming experiences this year. And to think, I only put it in my Blockbuster @Home queue because one of my coworkers at Dish kept insisting that I’d love it. I thought it looked like little more than another generic fantasy RPG and was going to skip it. I was wrong. I may as well have surgically grafted the controller to my hands this past week. I certainly didn’t expect to be playing it this long (especially since I think I’m only about halfway through), so I’m glad I didn’t rent it from Redbox like I used to. At a few dollars a day, it would add up quick.
