BBC Worldwide launches start-up support scheme

Emerging companies to be provided with office space, technical resources and access to networking events

BBC Worldwide has launched a mentoring initiative for new digital media start-ups in the UK to help them grow on a global scale.

The BBC Worldwide Labs scheme, which will last for six months, will provide five selected firms office space in the BBC media centre in White City, technical resources, monthly mentoring sessions and access to networking events.

Start-ups will also have on-going access to experts in technology, marketing, sales, advertising and law.

BBC Worldwide will not however invest in the companies or take an equity stake, but will offer the chance to create a commercial partnership with the media giant.

Eligible companies include those focused on gaming, virtual worlds, mobile and web applications.

The scheme will officially open for submissions on June 22nd with a Labs workshop event at Google Campus in Shoreditch, London. The deadline for applications is on July 15th.

I am sure this will suit some Tv content companies, but any new media companies with ambition and an understanding of what is happening out there in the world of the web, games and new media, should not allow itself to be too influenced by the BBCs view of the world which does not appreciate that these new media do not need to be under the over-watchful eye of a traditional broadcaster to be successful.
