RealID partners with Epic to bring stereoscopic 3D to Unreal Engine

‘True 3D’ for Unreal Engine 3

3D tech provider RealID has partnered with Epic Games to bring "true stereoscopic 3D" to Unreal Engine 3

UE3 has had 3D support provided by TriOrviz for some time, but the company says the difference made by their unique tech is something that can’t be put to words.

"Bringing RealD to the Unreal Engine makes it even easier to give players the most cutting-edge stereo 3D games possible,” said Epic Games President Dr. Michael Capps.

“We are thrilled to make their tools available to Unreal Engine developers everywhere."

RealID the code can simply be dropped into a program and implemented in a few days, and the depth budget allocation and autoCam features eliminate the need for camera parameters and depth sliders.

When asked if the automatic systems came at the expense of design freedom, RealID Product Manager John Mathews pointed out there are console commands to adjust screen size, and developers can tweak depth dynamically for any given scene.

"For creative reasons, a developer may want certain scenes flatter than others," explained Mathews.

"They can also play with the position of the depth. Maybe they want all of the depth in the background with the front very flat, or vice versa. All that is tweakable for the designer."

Seamless Entertainment’s SOL: Exodus is the first game to take advantage of the tech, and implemented the middleware in three days.

The new version with the 3D effects has already been released on Steam.

"We first demonstrated ‘SOL: Exodus’ in S3D at SXSW ScreenBurn, and people were blown away,” said Dan Magaha, Seamless Entertainment’s studio director .

“We had lots of repeat visitors and are excited to make the RealD-enhanced version of ‘SOL’ available to everyone."

The RealID developer toolkit is available to all users of the Unreal engine, including the free Unreal developer kit.
