BASCA removes 'games score' category after two years; Still wants to engage with industry

Ivor Novello Awards snubs games

Organisers for the Ivor Novello Awards have abandoned its excellence in games audio prize, explaining to Develop that there were too few entrants for the category.

The British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (BASCA), which operates the event, said that “after much consideration it has been decided not to present the Best Original Video Games Score category at the 2012 ceremony”.

The games audio award was introduced in 2009. Last year it was handed to The Creative Assembly, while the year prior it was given to Sony subsidiary Guerrilla Games(pictured).

However the event is best known for recognising talent in the music industry. Last year it handed grime artist Dizzee Rascal the Inspiration Award, while Lilly Allen scooped three awards the year prior.

“BASCA introduced Best Original Video Games Score at the Ivor Novello Awards to recognise British or Irish composers writing original scores for video games commercially released during the award year,” the group told Develop.

“The breadth of entries we received compared with other categories has led us to review the way we recognise this sector of the writing community.

“We are committed to awarding the best in original scores for games and will be engaging with the games industry to ensure we continue to do so in the future.”
