Next Xbox 'ditches disc drive and gets 2013 release'

Next Xbox 'ditches disc drive and gets 2013 release'

New console to 'offer compatibility with interchangeable sold-state card storage'

Microsoft has been telling partners that the Next Xbox will not include a disc drive, a new report has revealed.

A source speaking to MCV stated the briefings have been issued under what is described as “the strictest NDA” they have ever encountered.

Although the console will not include a disc drive, it will offer compatibility with some sort of interchangeable solid-state card storage, although it is not known whether this will be proprietary or a more standard format such as SD.

Furthermore, a 2013 launch date for the hardware has been confirmed. What is less clear, however, is the intended timing of Microsoft’s announcement.

Hmm i do not like the sound of this, kinda puts a total stop on backwards compatability, well for disc based games on the xbox anyway.

Lets hope they don't go digital only, i like digital, but i also like physical media.

I also didn't like the rumour floating about how once you buy a game, install it, it gets locked to that system. It's stuff like this that's puts me off xbox and makes me think about going back to pc gaming.

Who really plays Xbox games on their Xbox 360. Everyone bitches and moans about the possibility of not having backwards compatibility and yet very few people actually use the feature. Microsoft should ignore the idea of backwards compatibility unless it was bought through Games on Demand.

The rumour you mention is how the 360 works now. If they lock it to the machine then they'll implement a license transfer system like they have already.

So it won't play dvds or upgrade to Blu Ray? And yea that rumor of locking a game to a console or account is not cool either. I like to buy used games!

I dont think the market leaves much choice for them. Some companies (not giving any names) are promoting the used game more over buying the new copy. So the publishers and developers are losing money. Games today just cost too much money when you got 300 people on the game and each one is being paid 50K salary a year.
The retail just screwed themselves by being too greedy by doing this practice by undercutting the publishers and developers.

@Five-O

Oddly i do play old xbox games on my 360. I'm also thinking about current gen games being backwrds compatible, no disc drive means i wouldn't be able to carry across current games i like and i would want to keep hold of.

I guess it's all rumour anyway, but i don't like the sound of it so far. Really hope they include a blu-ray drive but will have to wait and see.

It would make sense to have a bluray player as an optional addon to cut costs, but to totally block optical storage would be extremely dumb as not everyone has superfast broadband.
