Report: PS4 harnesses AMD tech

'Former employees' claim unannounced console in the works

Sony is working on a new console that will use AMD graphics technology, according to a report.

News agency Forbes is reporting that “former AMD employees” have confirmed a new platform is in the works, most likely the PlayStation 4.

The sources also claimed that the tech outfit would play a key part in the new system.

AMD graphics tech is currently used in the Xbox 360, whilst Sony had previously used Nvidia to power the PS3. The move if true would mark a distinct change in strategy for the company.

Sony CTO George Bailey and AMD declined to comment on the story.

Considering how Nvidia's contract with Sony was so broken that the RSX rendered the hardware unprofitable for half a decade, I wouldn't be surprised that they are reticent about sticking with NV.
