Old Republic 'the fastest growing MMO ever'

BioWare game picks up 1.7 million subscribers in just over a month

Electronic Arts’ plan to capture the MMO market is showing encouraging early signs, as the publisher reveals its Star Wars title has sold more than 2 million copies worldwide in a little over a month.

Of those two million initial purchases across retail and digital portals, 1.7 million customers have signed up to paid subscriptions, EA said.

“This great launch makes Star Wars: The Old Republic the fastest growing subscription MMO in history,” EA CEO John Riccitiello said in an investor meeting yesterday.

At its peak, Activision Blizzard’s World of Warcraft MMO had about six times the subscriber base EA is currently flaunting.

“We’re incredibly pleased to see this great game from BioWare off to a very strong start,” Riccitiello added.

Yesterday EA posted a $205 million loss for the quarter, down from the third of a billion dollars it lost in the same period last year.

If you count F2P Runescape supposedly had 350 million accounts created back in 2008 which averages out to 4 million accounts created a month. I know most don't play anymore but 4 mill a month is more then 1.7 mill.
