Next-gen Xbox 'six times more powerful' than 360

Next-gen Xbox 'six times more powerful' than 360

Late 2013 release for new console 'confirmed', reports claim

Microsoft’s next-gen Xbox will be six times more powerful than the 360, according to reports.

“Sources close to the project” told IGN that the new system's GPU will be based on AMD’s 6000 series, specifically the Radeon HD 6670. Mass production of the GPU will allegedly begin by the end of 2012.

The graphics processor supports DirectX11, 3D and 1080p HD output.

It will be 20 per cent more powerful in terms of performance than Nintendo’s Wii U, according to the sources.

They also claimed that the next-gen system will be launched in late 2013, around October or November time.

Development kits are likely to reach developers “in August”.

6x more powerful than Xbox 360 but only 20% more than WiiU..?

A few things with that...

1) isn't WiiU supposed to be very similar in terms of power to 360? (though that in itself isn't confirmed) ... from the story, it sounds like WiiU is 5x the power of Xbox 360..?!?;

2) 6x more powerful at what..? Are we saying it can run Xbox 360 games 6x faster..? Or that it can draw 6x as much..? Or..? The problem I see here is that it's going to be very difficult to compare - DX11 allows some stuff - such as displacement mapping, hardware tesselation - that will help incredibly in increasing render quality... so I suspect the "6x" is irrelevant and, also, an understatement.

Other than the 6x figure - which seems like a number that someone made up - I don't see a story here..? DX11 was a given - and Xbox 360 already supports HD and 3D so how could the successor not..?

Graphics chip not CPU

The total power of the system isn't 20% faster than the Wii U just the graphics chip. Yeah the CPU of the wii U will be on par with current consoles but a modern graphics chip will make shadows and antialiasing and 1080p better than the current consoles. Memory and CPU makes a big difference that these rumors don't really cover. Plus it seems doubtful that a 2013 console will use such an old graphics chip unless the newer ones just use too much electricity and makes too much heat for a console.

6x the power huh? So I expect that the execs are going to expect 6x the game for the same hours and the same pay?

Call me cynical, but look historically at the workload increases on games for PS1, PS2 and PS3 I think we need something like Moore's law. "The amount of overtime and team size double every 5 years" :)

They decide to use 2 low end graphic cards in sli formation? Prob not but would be nice.

If they do that (which i doubt) they will def have to get the heat management spot on.
