Imminent court ruling to choke Runescape hackers

Imminent court ruling to choke Runescape hackers

Humiliated iBot creators to pay damages and attorney fees in upcoming order

Jagex is to be awarded a sum “in excess of six figures” for damages after a protracted court battle against Runescape hackers, legal papers show.

The ruling has been made against Impulse Software, the makers of various game hacks, including ‘iBOT’, which allows RuneScape players to level up even if they aren’t playing the game.

Jagex initially lost its bid for a preliminary injunction against Impulse in September 2010. But the latest ruling has resulted in the defendant writing a thorough apology admitting guilt to all charges.

Documentation seen by Develop shows that a Boston court last week ruled that Impulse  - and its owners Eric and Mark Snellman – were guilty of a number of offences including copyright infringement, circumvention of technological measures, as well as computer fraud.

The documents show the Boston district court has issued the demands through a court order, though the judge has yet to sign the document.

Impulse is to be henceforth forbidden from providing instructions on how to hack Runescape. Its employees will be permanently banned from playing any Jagex games.

The defendants, whose websites instructed how customers can succeed in Runescape with an AI program, will have pay for both parties’ attorney fees on top of damages.

Impulse must also transfer ownership of its websites to Jagex and destroy all bot code once the transfer had been made.

Once signed, breach of the order will result in a substantial pay out to Jagex. The final fee has not been disclosed other than it is in excess of six figures.

Impulse is barred from commenting on the matter.

The case against Impulse Software has been running for more than two years, with Jagex initially losing its bid for a preliminary injunction in September 2010 over copyright complexities.

At the time, the studio had apparently not made all of the necessary copyright registrations on its website or software – an accepted convention in the UK but no so in the US.

But the totality of Jagex’s victory was made clear in an enforced and comprehensive apology issued by Impulse.

“Throughout the course of this lawsuit, we’ve come to understand the harm that botting does to Runescape and Jagex,” read the Impulse statement.

“We’d like to apologise to Jagex and to all legitimate RuneScape players for the damage and harm iBot has done,” it added.

“In the next few weeks our websites, domains, code and customer details will be passed over to Jagex along with details of all those people who we know have developed scripts for iBot and sold or re-sold those scripts.

“Shortly, all references to iBot and Impulse Software will disappear from the internet. We’d encourage all of you who have scripts or iBot to delete them and certainty not to try and use or develop them.

“We’ve not been able to fix them anyway following Bot Nuke week, but if you did manage to get them working again, you’d be open to the same claims Jagex has made against us.”

First of all, good on Jagex for getting this sorted. However, I am worried that the focus will shift from levelling accounts quickly to hacking existing accounts. I've noticed more players in my clan complaining of being hacked and little done about it.

I would have to say good job Jagex on winning the fight against botters. But you are a little late. The botter's community have already ruined the game to where a player like me would probably never come back to RS. I have played since the time RSC was still available to players. Good fight but to little to late.

It's not Jagex's fault that people compromise their account security. People have been missing their security as of recent, and have not been running regular scans. It's not the fault of Jagex, that they can't keep their computer secure.
If Jagex had the security flaw, then everyone in the top 1000 would be hijacked.
Jagex need the co-operation of their player base to keep their accounts secure, and to alert them of any hijackings via the account security forum.

Jagex do tell people that they should only visit the official runescape website- (runescape.com)
They do also tell people to change their passwords, run scans, and check the URL before they log in. It's not their fault that not everyone does this. As for the phishing websites, they also have provided an email for people to report the websites at. Think smart.

Account hacking is a major Issue what ever you do you will get hacked someday my computer is more than clean and remain unhackable and 1 of my 4 account has been hacked they use to say it's a virus and all the bullshit they can say to blame you, make you feel bad and make you say "maybe my fault".
The tools bar from jagex has a malaware in it if you own it delete it and clean your temp file ASAP if you do a spyware scan you will find a dealio... malaware.
The game security is way too weak the password don't take care of caps and even if you have a pin on your bank in game the hacker will bypass it a keylogger is easy to detect but most of them requiere an instalation so be carefull on what you download, Rare are the keylogger who take screenshot and send them without your knowledge. To be honnest I don't plan to pay for that game anymore not even to play 4 for free they lost my support with their blame... Link you account with face book is an error to anyone who use a common password they can pass through your facebook account to login your your account I think that annough said about account hacking jagex fail at it.

Great job and congratulations JaGeX, this was a long and hard won battle but it was worth it in the end. And to all of you getting hacked, I don't see how it's their fault, most of the time it's either you clicking on a faulty link or just having bad luck and a bad anti-virus. To those of you complaining about the game, go away and stop following any news on it, it's rather simple. Again, nice job JaGeX, but there are some other things to patch up that I'm sure you're aware of, so get ready for the next round, because people just can't be satisfied.

Main problem is people thinking botting is the same as actually gaining the levels. The distinction between actual levels up and botting to them seems to be blurred. TBH tis a nice feeling levelling up, because you see something you earnt happen.

To those who got hacked. 99.9% of cases, being hacked if your own fault. If you botted (therefore signing over the password to your account), chances are, they stored it on record and when the bot nuke happens, they harvested for free gold to sell online. That's a whole different matter too, the RWT market largely drives all of this...

Hmm... I played runescape for 7 years and quit this year because I just got bored. I never botted in my entire life, I'm going to admit i've tried a couple of times to get a bot working, but i can never figure it out. Either way.. I think Jagex made a horrible decision overall... All the botting did was make some things cheaper for people, (that was nice because we all know cash is hard as fuck to make on runescape legit.) Also.. the botting motivated tens of thousands of people to buy membership. So unless jagex gets their shit together and get more people to start playing. Stuff really isn't going their way and I hope they notice that...

Yea!!!!, it good to see that finally something is done for the good guy for a change in our legal system.
and Maybe after the pay out (that 6 figures) is paid to Jagex, they can take and go into archives, and see what players got hacked and replace what that player did have. I know bigt pc's like this has to have archives, so I think they could go back and find the hacked players, because Jagex has all the info needed to go into any acc, so they don't have to just go on someones word, Least ways I hope so. Jagex has been making a lot of progress, so it's a possiblity, I"ll send a forum to them and see if they can do that. Big Kudos on the Judge to see justice served to the good guy for a change.

All those people who were complaining about bots being nuked really aren't thinking. The game was supposed to be played with potions, fish, and all other resources giving a decent amount of income. They don't really do that now due to the botters. After people see the prices going up, lower lvls and noobs will fill in the gaps and gravitate to those things which now give a decent amount of cash. Considering that low lvls won't lvl so fast without bots, they will spend more time earning cash through these methods and provided for the people with more cash than time. Sure prices will change, but they will be true to the economic supply and demand, and the variables will be much simpler. Besides, personally I hate the idea of kids who get 5 99s without spending a bit of time and sweat to get it. I've played for 6 years and I have put my time and energy into the game and I've had a lot of fun for it.

Exactly! Bots do keep the cost of resources low, but when it comes to leveling those skills where you obtain those resources yourself, your income will also be lower. The effects on RuneScape economics will balance out. Bots ruin the game - competition with the computer is never as enjoyable as friendly competition with other real players. It is also true that Jagex need to do something about hackers, scammers and merchants too.

Yes, getting rid of bots makes the game better for some...for the rich...while others, now have to work twice as hard to buy the supplies they could have bought for so much less when bots were around...
I spent tons of time in game getting gold to get my prayer to 84, my firemaking to upper 80s, all of my stats above 60....now it's going to be hard to finish...

I dont understand why Jagex doesnt hire those bot-makers. Most of them are kids, but they are really skilled in what they do, and they actually made those bots so they can help Jagex fight other bot makers. Like the guys behind SOPA and PIPA, they was actually the people who made internet piracy possible, and now they suddently wanna get it removed. That means people who makes programs, like these bots, can help fight it back.

Hacked people usually only have themselves to blame be more careful YOUR ACCOUNTS security is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. Make sure that you make a secure password I'd recommend at least 2 words separated by numbers. Don't use 3rd party software, don't give away personal information over the internet. Set your recover questions & your email address to get your extra bank space/ security on your account. Use antivirus/antispyware & firewall theres very good free ones available now. Scan everything you download & scan your whole computer at least weekly.

If you were hacked as a result of using a bot you have absolutly no simpathy from me. If you were hacked for some other reason then be more careful stay safe online.

I have a very high level account & have not been hacked once in the 8 years that I have played you can make it so that you don't get hacked to...

Awesome. As for the people that got hacked... Your loss and jagex won't and shouldn't help those who were hacked. As its easy to keep your account safe from these "hackers." Allot of them are your friends, siblings, etc.

And if not... Then stop going to virus infected websites that WILL get your rs info!! DUH! Makes me think the people who were hacked was on a bot website and it backfired on them lol.

There is no such thing as in game hacking, you gave your information to a friend and they screwed you over. That is your fault. If your account suddenly got hacked and you didn't give away your password then it was a easy password to figure out, you might have got the account from someone who is taking it back, your friend changed your security questions. A number of things all leading to the fact that you are stupid.

and if your argument is that a program hacked you then let me clear your stupid 10 year old head up on something. That is a virus/program you installed unknowing by going to a fake or illegal site that looks like runescape and you put in your info because again, you are stupid. This then installed itself and watched your key strokes when you logged in and sent it back to a website then that took your account.

I have been playing for years and every single kid I played with that said he got hacked did something stupid to cause it. There is no way to hack. Don't even bother trying to make up some reason why you lost your items. IT'S YOUR OWN FAULT.

NO ONE WAS "HACKED", nor did any accounts get compromised. It was just a player leveling bot which played the game even is the user was away from the computer. It was entirely on the client side. RuneScape did NOT get "hacked" and user using the bot has FULL knowledge of it on the computer.

Quite frankly these kinds of scrips do nothing illegal. It's just an AI script that controls the mouse and keyboard. The ONLY real illegal thing that was done was copyright infringement for using RuneScape's name and images on there site. The other charges are completely bogus and are just frivolous scare tactics.

Next time Develop needs to do better reporting and get the facts right.

Jagex and affiliates take gaming to far. My defense would be that Jagex is trying to corrupt youth of learning by making a game that takes multiple years to level up. This is what the world has become of a gaming development sueing people, that is hilarious. Also Jagex is charging money for the game which in some cases can be looked at as Internet Fraud because Jagex is not giving anything in return except Pixels. Yes I play RS but I say this, The Jagex Crew is sad.

About Getting Hacked

posted by IHackPeopleBrah Jan 24, 2012 at 4:22 am

IHackPeopleBrah

People getting hacked is a result of the fact that Runescape players are immature, young, semi-retarded children.

They don't know anything about computer security, and all you idiots acting like you know about it make me laugh.

Keyloggers don't take screen shots of pins, but a keylogger is not the only spyware/malware in existence even though you all think it is.

Half the time you're getting infected with a remote administration tool (RAT), which can do everything from record key strokes, and mouse strokes, and even your screen. Not only that, but they could control your mouse if they wanted.

And sorry to break the news to you, but anti-virus scans are not the fix-all solution.

A lot of people I know personally have made keyloggers and RATs themselves, from scratch, and a lot of anti-virus programs use databases to look for familiar infections.

Homemade, used-by-1 person programs can go for months before they're noticed by anti-virus companies. It's the extremely popular or poorly written ones that get found.

Alright, first of all in the real world a professional is only considered an expert after 10000 hours of work in a particular field. So a level 99 skill is not all that unreasonalble considering the real world equivalent. Botting therefore would be the same as hiring someone else/use AI to work those hours out for you. Botters learn nothing in the mean time toward that time needed for such title. Those angry are those adversly affected by the bot removal, ie..the botters. As for those hacked, determining those legitimatley hacked from botters and cheaters/liers is difficult at best. Also those legitimatley hacked are few and far between, rest are failed attempts to cheat. This said, those angry/botters/cheaters suck it up and move on or quit.....the game is overall better without you and closer to the original vision of the creators. Enough said......well in my opinion anyway.

Go Jagex!

3 Reasons why botting is bad:
1.)Ruins the prices of everything so no one has to try anymore to get anything - 5 years ago a whip was 3.5 mill. Look at it now.

2.)Botters basically steal the resources from the people that work for and need them - whenever I even go near the magic or yew trees there's always 3+ bots just sitting there and walking a direct path between the tree and the bank. Hill giants used to be okay, but there is no world left that doesn't have 3+ botters pwnin away.

3.)It totally destroys the awesome feeling you get whenever you get that skillcape - you work for a year (okay, not a full year) to get one of those stats to 100, and then there's a guy who can do it in a week and not even go near a computer. That is just sad and messed up.

Jagex, you probably won't destroy all the bots, but keep trying and maybe stabalize the game by removing most of them, and at that point it wouldn't matter as much and 130+s could enjoy the game again. TYVM later.

I've been hacked before due to these "real life" item traders and to be honest Jagex should do a refund to the people that have lost years of work when they got hacked. It could also be a nice way for them to keep their subscribers if they gave them a tiny bit of security to what they have been working for within Runescape.

All you fags think it's great but it's not.
As a result of the bot nuke jagex has lost over 50% of it's monthly revenue, to offset this they will increase the price of membership.
So are you prepared to pay the extra cost to play such a shit game as runescape?
In reality no most people won't and as a result jagex will lose more revenue and it will go the same way as many other online rpg's and will end up going bankrupt within a few years, not that it's a loss to anyone as it was such a shot game anyway.

Seriously most of you people are morons.
First let me say I've played runescape for 6 years, never botted once, never been hacked and quit about 3 months ago.

Anyone who honestly believe that it's great that jagex is pretty much down the toilet, with crap all revenue coming in because of their recent choices is plain DUMB.

Jagex may have won 6 figures from some poor bugger who was picked out of the pond of bot developers, but their operating income is so small now that it's unbelievable. Anyone else notice the declining quality of their updates, the smaller amount of staff which they have and not to mention the drop of online players from around 100, 000 to 30, 000 at peek aussie time.

Runescape isn't making any money at the moment, some time soon jagex are going to go under and runescape will be sold off or completely die.

Botting helped make runescape what it is. Not only did botting bring in a huge amount of revenue for jagex but it helped people get resources which would either cost a fortune or take a long time to get, which when botting wasn't so big, previously deterred people from playing the game to it's full extent.

The cost of membership has gone up, their offering deals for buying multiple month memberships, which they never did before they started their bot crack down. Their milking runescape and the community for all it's got before they go under.

@Kurt,

So you think they should allow botting? bots ruin the game there every where legit players are trying to play taking all the resources and not even playing the game.

If you can't make money on runescape then theres something wrong with you all you do is click is time no skill needed.

And all you people crying about being hacked its your own faults for going to stupid websites promising millions and downloading viruses or making friends with players on RS and adding them to messenger and having them sending you something.

I have had my account since 2002 and never been hacked because i dont go to these stupid websites and my anti virus and malware scanner are running.

The drop in players will be a lot of botters who can no longer bot so dont want to play im glad there gone even if i dont play much any more why should they make money of the back of Jagex its not the business its Jagexs.

I agree botting is bad but why didn't Jagex do anything in the past to stop it? If they did we wouldn't been stuck with scammers at the GE or hackers right now trying to find cash. However botters in P2P = lots cash for Jagex. No botters - barely any cash from the 60k/500k players.

The economy will balance itself whether bots exist or not. If bots exist, resources are cheaper to buy, but its harder to make money. If bots don't exist, prices go up and make it harder to buy things, although you make more money from skilling. Bots are only detrimental when used by Chinese gold farmers like the ones you see at green dragons. Don't get me wrong, bots are bad, but many people used them just for leveling up their main.

To those who say that botters don't get any satisfaction from the game and that botters don't have lives: I have in the past botted. I still get satisfaction because I can actually do things I couldn't do before, such as take on difficult bosses. Botting allows me to have the fun of Runescape with the long grind. I don't see how botters don't have lives, when you spend all your time on a game, when botters like me get other things done like homework and going out with our girlfriends.

To those who say that bot clients give you keyloggers: You are idiots. Although now closed, RS Buddy had millions of users and never once did RSB hack its players. Of course some bots include viruses, but you probably just downloaded some fake program off youtube. Honestly, if you are smart with what you download you won't be hacked. I used Powerbot and RSB for an entire year and my seven-year old account has never once been touched.

Color bots is the way of the future until a catalyst or direct x bot comes out. we are currently creating a client for color bots running on simba which is a color recongnition reader. there is already 1 botting site up now, But soon there will be more. I was a ibot user until jagex was trying to hit them hard. what happen to rsbuddy as they were a big market almost as big as impsoft. but yet they actualy goto runefest and sucks Mark Gerhard pi dick, And gets off from ruining the game. but impsoft gets fked on. 2 faced jagex 2 faced. I bet you loved how 2million people playing at 1 time about 1.2m with membership every month. why dont you take that money you made and donate it to charity as its dirty money. but u pesist on taking the snellman's house out of context. your a bunch of greedy money hungry fk wits. Bots will live on and you will die a fkn snobby ass company who jerk off to hentai and have your precious Ex Andrew Gower being a fkn pedofile realy makes runescape a game for targeted kids. Shame on you.... Ever get told ingame you need a life?
Start botting today just search botmart to find more infomation.

Maybe they should focus on making their game an actual game instead. As it stands now, Runescape is work. You click to go to the mine, click to mine some stuff, click to walk back to the bank and click to deposit your ores. Repeat. That's not a game, it's work.
It simply isn't fun, that's why people buy these "hacks", so they can let robots do the boring things while they actually enjoy the fun things. Games should never be boring, simple as that.

All of you meed to get a few things straight..
- your membership prices in rs will continue to stay the same if you continue to subscribe. The increase will only effect on and off subscribers and new ones.

- with majority of bots gone this allows for resource skills to make way more money then before.

- hacking of accounts is not jagex's fault ever. There are many things pur in place to protect you like email logins, security questions, bank pins. The obly way you can get hacked is buy getting a keylogger from a fake rs site.

On a final note i don't see why people who bit come on here to post.. Its obvious they dont care about the game or enjoy it enough to even play it so why are they rage posting here? Also the game is not about grind you choise to do it. If get sone friends in game you can do any bosses you wont at medicire levels that are easy to get. That is all. Difficult to make money?

Money on RuneScape is hardly difficult to make. There's Runecrafting, which may be slow and boring, but it's very, very profitable. With bots in the game, Runecrafting was a joke. It was a slow skill with very little profit.

Fishing is now profitable as well. Sharks were down to 600gp each before bot-nuke day, and now they sell at 1.6k easily.

Hunter benefited as well. Red chinchompas were down to under 500gp each just before bot-nuke day, and now are at 1.9k. At 90+ Hunter, you catch about 400 or so per hour. That's just under 800k in cash each hour of Hunting. The money isn't even that bad at level 70.

See? There are three easy skills you can use to make money. If you want to whine about how expensive everything is or how hard it is to make money, then fine. Just keep buying the items I put on the Grand Exchange and I'll be happy.

I, personally have never heard of iBot, however I have heard of Impulse Software. this victory (if it is absolute or not) is going to be a very strong warning to other bot developers out there... 6 digits is an awfully large sum. but for some common things I see in the other posts, I'd like to give explanation and/or my opinion.

- getting your account "hacked" is most likely an issue on your end... watch your internet activity closely...
- jagex (as far as I can tell) hasn't broke any law...
- money (as a member) is easily made at most any level with little effort...
- why bot? from what I have seen bots are terribly slow... I could probably skill half-assed and end up out-performing most bots out there... and I'm not even a skiller!

dont like what I have to say? too bad, your opinions are as unimportant and irrelevant as mine.

That's like shutting down a company that produces cars because some crazy people go on a rampage.

Bots are in no way doing anything against the structure of the program. It's a simple macro!
