Ubisoft shuts down Vancouver studio

Publisher 'couldn't find right formula for success' at former Action Pants developer

Ubisoft has closed down its Vancouver development studio, the publishing giant has revealed.

The French company said it was closing down operations at the Canadian studio as it couldn't find "the right formula for success".

“Ubisoft confirms that we have made the difficult decision to close its studio in Vancouver," a Ubisoft spokesperson told Game Informer.

"Unfortunately, we haven’t found the right formula for success for the talented team there. We thank our Vancouver team for their hard work and the projects that they have delivered.

"Team members will have the opportunity to consider positions in other Ubisoft studios and we will work with each of them to help find the best next step, whether it be within Ubisoft or outside.”

Ubisoft Vancouver was first formed in 2009 when the French publisher acquired independent studio Action Pants, which already had more than 110 employees.

It was responsible for games such as Wii title Champions: Soccer  and Motionsports Adrenaline for Kinect and Move

Employment at the studio had been reduced to 75 full-time staff by November last year, with the studio concentrating its efforts on developing assets for games made at other Ubisoft studios, such as Driver: San Francisco, rather than creating its own IP.

They found their formula was lacking the magical 40% government subsidy.

Yep, it'll be that Quebec's bribes* are bigger.

* Sorry, subsidy.

Genuine sorrow for the employees - but serves UBISOFT right for pandering to greedy tax payouts. Should have stuck to Britain instead of walking at the first sound of jingling change. Oh well off to China now? And when you realise the chinese dont work to formula where to then...Mongolia?

Go develop your games in Montreal, Quebec ... if you want your work forces working the absolute minimal amount of hours a day for any North American based company. Sad statement for Vancouver losing such an office.
