Markus Persson makes 'Minicraft' as part of the 22nd Ludum Dare competition
Minecraft creator Markus ‘Notch’ Persson has developed a new browser-based game in just 48 hours.
The game, Minicraft, was created as part of the 22nd Ludum Dare competition, challenging developers to make a game in two days.
It is a top-down action game in which users can mine rocks, chop down trees, fight zombies and create items.
The game’s description reads: “The goal of the game is to kill the only other sentient being in the world, making sure you'll be alone forever.”
Minicraft can be accessed online for free here.
The Mojang Specifications boss recently announced he would be stepping down from the lead development role on Minecraft and taking a break from development, with Jens Bergensten taking over duties.
As the title says - how is this news? Where are the articles on the countless other Ludum Dare entries?
"Notch" is a bit clueless when it comes to programming, and it only infuriates me more and more that because he made one successful game (which no arguments, is great) he suddenly appears in countless other news articles with his opinions. Why though I'm not sure, because they don't mean squat and I haven't met a single other programmer who takes this guy seriously! Even the the "controversial" Bruce Dell (Euclideon) correctly pointed out how little he knew when pushing his opinions about "Unlimited Detail".
Can never see why this guy appears so often compared to the countless other more talented and more knowledgeable industry professionals...
Agreed on the comment above. So I tried the game and its nothing special really. I don't see why this is news. Game jams are rather common these days and there are far better entries than this.
A faithful reader.
Well I just had a go and it's such an amazing game. Simple to code, but can provide hours of game play.
I'm not sure how far you got but sometimes you have to build a path to another island to find more rocks and go underground.
I'm quite impressed with the execution of the concept, it's has the same models as the farmville type games, but I much prefer this approach to the progressive use of item development.
This could easily be developed into something with more depth.
Also agreed with CukyDoh, and the article should at least link to the actual Ludum Dare site: http://ludumdare.com/
I just wanted to add my agreement to this. Over 700 entries to Ludam Dare, and all we hear about on gaming news sites is that "Notch went and done a thing..." /careface
Write about Ludum Dare instead! :(
The title should be 'Over 700 people created a game in 48 hours.'
Notch is cool and all, but Ludum Dare really deserves it's own article - the creativity it encourages and it's community it has built over the years should be appreciated and recognised!
we need to nurture and support indie developers - it would be excellent if Develop did a regular article about the event and the entries.
