Square Enix to use tech for PS Vita and PS3 project
Unity Technologies has licenced its popular engine to Square Enix’s famous internal Tokyo studio.
The studio, called ‘1st Production Department’, is relied on to build major updates in the Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts series.
Now the group is utilising the Unity 3D engine to build a PS Vita and PS3 project.
Japanese publication Andriasang has ousted various Square Enix job vacancies which suggest the Unity-built game would be an RPG.
However, there is an element of uncertainty concerning Square Enix’s intentions with the project, with a fleeting suggestion that the Unity project could be built elsewhere.
In March, Square Enix revealed it had established a new studio dedicated to the development of smartphone games.
Unity, a free-to-try engine that supports numerous platforms, has an install base upwards of 750,000 customers.
Last week, Square Enix teased a new action RPG project that is being built with Unreal Engine. The Tokyo headquartered publisher is to use Unreal technology for multiple unannounced projects.
That might just be the triple-A project Unity needs. Well-deserved.
Buying Unity should be a no brainer for these companies considering it only costs $1500.
Standard features a game engine should be required to have are either missing or incomplete. I hope these companies have done their homework.
There's a source code version so the feature set doesn't really matter. @stuart, I'm no fan of the endless free publicity Unity gets from most of the press but what missing features are you talking about? Most engines are missing export to multiple platforms, that's a big gaping hole in most engine feature-sets, imho.
