Publisher swoops for digital dynamos

Ubisoft acquires Trials developer RedLynx

Ubisoft has bought Finland-based developer RedLynx, the studio best known for its Trials Xbox Live game.

The publisher has bought the company as part of its active plans to grow its online output. RedLynx has produced some 100 games since 2000.

“We are delighted to welcome RedLynx to the Ubisoft family,” said Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot.

“Their expertise in asynchronous online games and physics-based game mechanics provides us with a great opportunity to bring their powerful brands, most notably Trials, to an even broader range of fast-growing digital platforms."

RedLynx CEO Tero Virtala added: “As part of the Ubisoft team, RedLynx will be able to focus even more intently on creating stand-out, excellent brands that push the boundaries of online gaming in many new growth areas.

“With Ubisoft, a wider audience will get the chance to enjoy our games, we’ll generate more value for our brands, and also leverage our experience more broadly in digital distribution channels."

The acquisition follows Ubisoft’s purchases of other online studios such as Massive Entertainment, Nadeo, Quazal and Owlient as it looks to strengthen its online presence.

Motorcyle Xbox Live game Trials HD, RedLynxs’ flagship title, has had over two million downloads (including DLC) since its release in 2009.
