Splosion Man group 'will help drive innovation across Xbox Live and Kinect'
Microsoft has acquired Twisted Pixel, the Texas-based indie studio responsible for XBLA games such as Splosion Man.
Financial terms of the buyout were not disclosed.
Twisted Pixel will now “incubate and develop the future of game and entertainment offerings on Microsoft’s Xbox 360 platform”, Microsoft said.
The Austin-based studio will also shape future Kinect games, Microsoft claimed.
Twisted Pixel, founded in 2006, bridged close ties with Microsoft after developing The Gunstringer – originally an XBLA game which went on to become a full retail product for Kinect.
“Twisted Pixel has an incredible track record of delivering innovative, critically acclaimed, and most importantly, fun, games,” said Microsoft Studios boss Phil Spencer.
“Microsoft Studios is home to cutting-edge entertainment experiences, and the incredible creativity of the Twisted Pixel team will help drive further innovation around Kinect and Xbox Live.”
Michael Wilford said it is “really exciting for us to solidify our long-standing relationship with Microsoft”.
Despite the boss stating how "excited" they are, this is definitely bad news for creativity.
Twisted Pixel 'was' one of the few studios showing that the mid-budget range is capable of very creative (and still profitable) games, but a massive megacorp absorbing one of those is always bad news, from the exployees (Microsoft won't hesitate to fire people when the winds change) to the fan base.
Sad day. Good that there are still a few Double Fines left
