Modern studios need constant support, Heavy Rain creator says

Cage: I’d be tempted if Sony wanted to buy Quantic

The founder of Paris studio Quantic Dream says he already feels loyal to Sony and would be tempted if the PlayStation company ever made an acquisition offer.

David Cage told Develop that the studio has signed another exclusivity deal with Sony.

He said the studio was building “something exciting, something different. Hopefully it will build on the foundations of Heavy Rain, but go forward in a very, very, different way.”

Asked if he’d like to take the relationship one step further and be fully owned by Sony Worldwide Studios, Cage said “of course I would. Of course. I really like Sony, honestly I do. They’ve made some bets with developers like Fumito Ueda and Media Molecule. I kind of feel loyal to them.”

Quantic Dream remains independent from external ownership. It has in the past used publisher funding for projects. But today, he said, the industry is in a position where studios need constant support.

“It’s not like we need help, but we want to compete,” he said.

Elsewhere in his wide-ranging interview with Develop, Cage revealed his studio was asked to contribute to an unknown FPS game, bringing its storytelling expertise to the game.

“That was very exciting, but we couldn’t make it in the end,” he said.

“But it doesn’t matter. We have a new story to tell. Now I want to show that what can be done with Heavy Rain can be done with completely different stories. I want to show what we’ve done isn’t one game, it’s a genre.”

Sony’s worldwide studio division now boasts sixteen development groups, hiring over 2,700 associated employees.
