Bethesda: Mojang's Scrolls infringes Skyrim

Bethesda: Mojang's Scrolls infringes Skyrim

Notch receives letter from Bethesda lawyers over the naming of upcoming indie title

Bethesda lawyers have sent a cease and desist letter to Markus ‘Notch’ Persson over the naming of Mojang Specifications’ upcoming title Scrolls, Persson has claimed via Twitter.

The action presumably relates to the ‘Elder Scrolls’ franchise name of Bethesda’s fantasy RPG series, of which the upcoming Skyrim is the latest installment.

"Just got a letter from Bethesta's lawyers," Persson writes.

"They claim 'Scrolls' infringes on their trademark and everyone will confuse it with Skyrim."

Persson’s yet-to-be released game, only the second from his studio that is best known for the sandbox mega-hit Minecraft, is a turn-based digital fantasy card game.

I can understand what Bethesda's lawyers are getting at, however it's a bit of a stretch to think any gamer will mix Elder Scrolls' 'Skyrim' (or just Skyrim as it has been referenced as) with Notch's Scrolls.

Regardless it would be labelled by the community to differentiate them. Even an unwary consumer could see and understand the difference.
