Black Rock hiring for 'free-to-play Unity game'

Disney-owned developer likely turning its attention to digital games

Brighton group Black Rock Studios has moved from triple-A racing projects to free-to-play digital titles, new data suggests.

The Split/Second creator said it is looking for a new game director in a Develop Jobs post, adding that its new project “is created with Unity and the role requires an in-depth understanding of free-to-play gaming and gaming in general”.

The new role is also seeking someone who is “passionate about player metrics”, further suggesting the studio is building a web-based game.

However, the studio’s choice to build content on the Unity Engine means there is a range of platforms the game could launch on.

Unity-built games have been released on a wide variety of platforms including iPhone, XBLA and Android tablets.

Black Rock has undergone a transformation in recent months. In May, parent company Disney Interactive began a layoff operation that, according to unconfirmed accounts, affected as many as 40 people.

It was also claimed the studio had been put on a single production line.

It will be interesting to see how all these AAA studios fair with each other when competing in the 'free' social games/download only space. Is there a financially sustainable business model for well paid professionals? Can the skill set move across easily? Is this the new gold rush and shall we see these companies jump back to PS4/Xbox3 when they are eventually released? I stand back and await the outcome.
