iPhone, Android and browsers all supported with new 'drag-and-drop' game creator
Engine vendor GameSalad is launching a new tool suite that is said requires no knowledge of programming languages to get the most out of.
The new suite of tools builds games principally through a drag-and-drop user interface, with games exported in HTML5 code.
GameSalad says its new tool removes the barrier to entry for developing games for iPhone, Android devices, and building in the HTML5 standard ensures games will display on most browsers.
The company has not explained why it is not supporting Flash, which is one of the most ubiquitous web standards in the world today.
GameSalad CEO Steve Felter claimed HTML5 is “the next language of the web”.
“We’re giving people the ability to play and share GameSalad games within a web browser – dramatically expanding both the reach of our developers’ games and their ability to create conversations and community around them,” he added.
Games without coders. They'll be good. Not.
Like Stencyl's drag-and-drop logic, this sounds great for learning the methodical logic required for coding. And I'm sure it'll produce some fun web games. But even with a simplified logic system, aspiring game devs will still need to be methodical, logical and careful how they assemble their drag-and-drop blocks. There's more to coding than knowing the grammar of C++/Java/etc.
MIGHT of mentioned this was ONLY for the mac,
"To ensure compatibility with Apple’s developer tools, GameSalad Creator is designed to work only with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard or greater.
We highly recommend taking this opportunity to upgrade your operating system."
This is like trying to develop for the iPhone.
developing games without coding is no fun at all.
