Former Zynga and Playwell senior staff assume roles at transmedia development outfit

38 Studios hires duo of MMO veterans

38 Studios has hired two new members to assume places in its executive team, both of whom come from senior positions at online gaming giants.

John Blakely has joined 38 Studios as senior vice-president of development, while Mark Hansen is stepping up as senior vice-president of operations and business.

Blakely previously served as general manager of Zynga Austin, and before that held a position as vice-president of development at Sony Online Entertainment. His new role will see him oversee game development at 38 Studios’ offices in Providence, and at subsidiary Big Huge Games in Baltimore.

Meanwhile Hansen – who will head up the outfit’s publishing efforts, including operational services, marketing, and business development – comes from a former role as senior director of Playwell Studios, where he oversaw the online game business, development, and operations, including the Lego Universe MMO.

"From its founding, 38 Studios has always been about team," said Curt Schilling, founder and chairman of 38 Studios. "I am proud to add these two team-focused and incredibly accomplished leaders to the 38 Studios roster.

"Between EverQuest, EverQuest II, DC Universe Online and Lego Universe, both John and Mark have had a decade of experience, and success, in the MMO space and I’m excited they are now part of the 38 Studios family."

Founded in 2006, 38 Studios is presently at work on an unannounced original IP due to see release as an MMO, and through books, console games, comics, toys and numerous other merchandise items.
