Miyamoto: Wii U will only read one screen-pad

Nintendo researching whether Wii U can work with more than one touch-screen controller

The once-inestimable potential of the Wii U console has been cut to size – with Nintendo confirming that only one screen-pad will work with each system.

Nintendo development boss Shigeru Miyamoto said Nintendo’s “basic premise is that you can use one [Wii U controller] with a system."

How this impacts on third parties hoping to bring dual-analogued triple-A games to the system is unknown, though it will likely become a talking point for developers.

Nintendo Wii classic controllers can work with the system, theoretically opening up the possibility of “core game multiplayer”.

It is not known if Nintendo is going to assure third-party publishers that it will manufacture and promote other “core controllers” for the system.

The success of the Nintendo Wii U, as a core games platform, is hinged on how third party studios work with the tech.

Nintendo’s business is selling the Wii U through exclusive games and innovative use of the tech, the company’s US boss said this week.

Today, Miyamoto told News.com.au that a 3DS could theoretically be used with the system.

“If we got to an idea of having multiple controllers it might just be more convenient for people to use their Nintendo 3DS and have a way to connect that," he said.

That claim suggests the Wii U can theoretically transmit visual data to more than one separate controller screen – a theory that Nintendo is investigating.

"We are doing research about if someone brings their controller to their friends house and they want to play together on Wii U to whether or not something like that would be possible," Miyamoto said.

The Wii U can play five-player games using up to four Wii Remote Plus controllers.

only one?!?

hmm i think that you should be able to use two.maybe it has to do with resolution and visual data transmission speed.

it would be great to make and play various games (i.e. horrormysterypuzzle games) where each person could see something different on his own screen and combine clues or general information about the subject in hand. imagine a tactical shooter where one of the team members can actually see things with special thermal vision monitors and so many other cool things. Yes it would be expensive, BUT it would be optional. so whoever really wanted to take his augmented reality experience to the next level could!

OR give your spaceship weapon controls and navigation controls to different players allowing them to collaborate for sci-fi space battles. so many things i can come up with that a second pad would allow even richer gaming experiences! from casual to the hardest core!

i hope nintendo allows more than one control because it would make many people want thier system because think of all the possibilities u can come up with i mean they need to start trying here ever since they took rare out it was bad enough they didnt make the awsome games they made back then but now this i mean give me a break we need more features dont just go with one option but many such as lets say super smash bros strife were to come out and were all stuck with having to use a 3ds to play with another freind when we can have another seperate contrl to play with what if they dont have a 3ds that would ruin alot of nintendos buisness because lets face it how many people would buy a 3ds just to play multiplayer due to the fact that its a heck of alot more expensive than a wii u controller and lets face it not everyone has wifi here so how are we suppossed to enjoy multiplayer when were left with so little options here?we need rare back with a new banjo kazooie a new mario 64(not a remake) a new conker because we all know how many of us liked that game and games like 007 need to have a better soundtrack i mean its not all about graphics but gameplay as well games these days are too easy too short and too well they need variety make games as interesting as those three n64 games and u my freind nintendo will make alot of money because us the fans and buyers need to be heard!

Ability for two controllers like the original NES would be awesome. They should poll the Wii community to determine whether consumers are willing to shell out extra cash for additional controller.

It's a data transmission limit. Nothing to do with nintendo 'allowing' more than one WiiU controller. There's a physical maximum amount of data that can be transmitted over Bluetooth per frame. Simple as that.

Talk of having 3DS connectivity is different because the 3DS itself would be doing the rendering and game processing, meaning the amount of data required for transmission would be far less - simple control data and button presses, and so on; far different from sending an audio and video stream.

Yeah that's not even close to saying that it's only possible to have one.

@Industry Vet: The video uses 2.4ghz wireless, the controls use bluetooth. No way bluetooth could ever transmit lag free video

So you are gonna tell me, that Nintendo's gameplan went from family fun accessible to, "give me the god damn touchscreen it is my turn now, here take the waggle remote..."
