E3 2011: 'We have only seen a PC version of DICE project', Activision boss says
Activision CEO Bobby Kotick has cast doubts over recent video demonstrations of rival project Battlefield 3.
The publishing exec was cautious not to join in on the widespread acclaim for the Modern Warfare 3 rival – particularly due to its graphical sophistication – and believes questions still hang over how the game will perform on consoles.
“So far I’ve only seen Battlefield 3 on a PC, I haven’t seen it on a console where the bulk of our business is,” he told CNBC.
“If it’s just a PC title, as it looks like today, that’s just a small audience to participate,” he added.
Kotick was responding to comments from EA CEO John Riccitiello, who apparently claimed that Battlefield 3 would outsell the third Modern Warfare title.
“We’re always interested to see what our competitors are doing,” Kotick added.
Battlefield 3, developed at Swedish studio DICE, is being built for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.
EA’s game is due October 25th in the UK, while Activision will release Modern Warfare 3 just two weeks later, on November 8th.
CNBC’s video interview with Bobby Kotick can be found below.
Well considering how close BFBC2 was between PC and Console versions, I think DICE are going to be ok with BF3.
Also, I'm quite sure that DICE have already said that their videos have been a mix of PC and Console footage.
From what I've seen from MW3, it's yet another crash, bang, wallop series of big setpieces. In fact it may as well be an 'on rails' shooter for all the involvement the player actually has within the games' environment.
I don't think for one second that BF3 will outsell MW3, but it's getting closer all the time. The fact that old Bobby boy is choosing to focus on the fact that early demos may be running on PC, says to me that Acti are seriously worried by the competition. So they should be too; DICE's Frostbite engine is something very special indeed, and they have gone from strength to strength in the last few years, while Infinity Ward have had a tough year to say the least.
Yeah he really needs to realise that most games, while it's nice if they look good, have to play well. I'm sure BF3 will be fine though, i was totally satisfied with BFBC2 so if it's a step up from that, i'll be happy.
COD, please die and leave good memories, don't keep going and make people look back and think "milked into the ground"
I'll take 10.
The man is out of touch. To say the pc market is small? If anything the console market is failing, restricted by old hardware and lack of inivation.
I stopped buying MW after MW2, i've reserved my copy of BF3, that is my gun of choice...MW3 got flashbanged and knifed at E3 2011
Jeza, how can you say that console gaming is restricted by old hardware?
PC games have to cater for min spec hardware. Only now are we seeing a move away from Dx9 and Windows XP games and that still isn't a mass movement.
PC gaming will never be as good as it could be due to min spec hardware that is still out there.
Reserved CoDMW3 Elite Edition and won't bother with BF3.
Obviously he is worried about BF3 launching 2 weeks before MW3 and stealing all his money!
MW3 = no dedicated servers, pay for COD Elite community features = NO BUY
BF3 = Dedicated servers, free battlelog = BUY
MW is old news...
I heard a rumour the man himself tried to get into the BF3 stand to play the game at E3(via his PA of course), and he got flat out refused. Hahaha.
Welcome to the No Bobby's Club...
@ Futureofgaming "PC games have to cater for min spec hardware"
PC Games are usually scalable. BFBC2 for instance runs in a low res with low detail on a fairly old PC of mine, but on my nice new PC it looks stupidly good!
Many new games are also compatible with DX9 and 10 and only activating the DX10 features if you have it.
Games for consoles ARE stuck with a set hardware. PC are not.
The scale on Battlefield 3 looks great unline MW3 that scales back a little to far. The realism in Battlefield is all because of the scaling not the graphics. The bigger the better and the more realistic. exp: Halo Reach has scaling to far back.
