Sony: PS Vita and PS3 could replicate Wii U system

E3 2011: But Sony already has plenty of other projects underway, insists Yoshida

SCE Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida is interested in Nintendo's recently announced Wii U, and says it will likely inspire PS  Vita developers to carry out experiments with the newly named Sony handheld.

"It is very interesting the ways that Nintendo went with Wii U, and I was surprised it wasn't exactly as it had been rumoured," Yoshida told Develop at E3.

"Already people are starting to ask about linking Vita and PS3 to do something similar, in terms of using two screens, and having controls on the screen.

"That's very interesting, and we will have to experiment," he added, before suggesting that such work was already, to a certain extent, underway.

"Lots of the things that developers of Vita games are doing, as you may have seen, is experimenting with connectivities between Vita and PS3.

"The Wipeout [2048] team came up with their cross play ideas, and the other Vita teams have come up with ways of playing with two systems. It's just a matter of time, as we provide the SDKs to developers so they can make use of both PS3 and Vita, and they might come up with something interesting."

Nintendo unveiled its new console, Wii U, at its Press Conference earlier today, the morning following Sony's own event at which it named the system formally known by codename NGP.

Totally saw this coming. The PSP already has remote play with PS3 games, and the Vita has all the same features that the WiiU controller has (gyro, touch screen, dual analog, cameras).

I'm sure Sony's R&D will be working on expanding the connectivity features.

And third party developers will probably be able to offer PS3+Vita owners the same special features that WiiU owners will get.

While technically the idea on paper between Wii U and PS3/Vita works... the fact that Wii U and 3DS are to work today [already confirmed for Super Smash Bros], meaning Nintendo have an additional touch screen divice ontop of the Wii U controller's tablet screen.

That's without looking into the costs of buying both a PS3 and a PSVita, compared to buying the Wii U with the tablet as part of the package.

So yes, on paper, possible... competitively and financially? No.

3rd parties will make it happen

3rd parties will be porting/making multiplatform games (WiiU/PS3/360), and for the Wii U they'll obviously be utlizing the screen controller in some fashion. All they have to do is make those same 2nd screen modes implementable on the PS3 version that can be utilized by those with Vitas. So the PS3 versions will have both the regular one screen controller version and a 2screen/touch feature version code on the same disc. No diferent than games that support DS3 and Move. Just play it however you want if you have the peripherals...

@ Ben, So I gues you know the price of the Wii U...$250-$300 for PSV and in a year and a half PS3 should be around $200, placing both @ $450 - $500. I am betting Wii U is likley to come in around $500. So actually very comparable. Not to mention with PSV, it is mobile, while there is nothing saying the Wii U is mobile. Also, many will already have PS3. so just need to pick up PSV. So Competitivly and financially? YES.

As the post above said, potential purchasers KNOW that Wii U will have almost all its games designed for this screen controller precisely because its designed for it. PS and PSPVita on the other hand will always be a hotch potch of developers, some of which deciding to use a similar feature but most probably not.

Wii U is designed for this!!!

Couple of things.
1st: yes I saw this coming, but I do foresee problems if Sony tries to replicate Wii U.

1. It's already said by developers the Wii U will by significantly more power. Maybe that extra processing power (Wii U) is to handle all those feature WITHOUT LAG to do all that cool stuff INSTANTLY.

2. The Wii U is designed for this. If Sony tries this with PS3 and Vita it'll be some patch job with aged hardware as the PS3 has been out for several years now.

3. I doubt the Wii U controller will be as expensive as PS Vita. The PS3 is already $300.00 the Vita is $250.00. I strongly doubt people will pay $250 every time they want a new controller.

1) I agree there will mostly likely be problems - the fact that most WiiU dev's will be using this functionality vs a far smaller amount on the PS3/Vita combo being the main one in my opinion.
2) I really doubt more processing power will make much of a difference, especially when you consider that the PS3 is not exactly a weak device, and Vita is rediculiously powerful for a handheld. In addition, this isn't similar tech to move/kinect wherea large amount of processing goes into understanding the data.
3) Agree
4) Theres two sides to that argument. How many people will really be up for buying a second WiiU controller if it comes in at 100quid+, where as its more likely that a second player will have a Vita of thier own with them, given its a portable device.
