Windows 8 will be optimised for 'a variety of different form factors'
Microsoft will launch the successor of its Windows PC operating system next year, the company’s chief has revealed.
Steve Ballmer said at a press conference in Tokyo that the new operating system would be optimised for tablet devices, PCs and “a variety of different form factors”.
Elsewhere in his speech, Ballmer referred to the next version of Windows as ‘Windows 8’ – a rumour that Microsoft PR has been keen to suffocate.
“We're obviously hard at work on the next version of Windows,” he said.
“Windows 7 PCs will sell over 350 million units this year. We've done a lot in Windows 7 to improve customer satisfaction. We have a brand new user interface. We've added touch, and ink, and speech.
“And yet, as we look forward to the next generation of Windows systems, which will come out next year, there's a whole lot more coming. As we progress through the year, you ought to expect to hear a lot about Windows 8. Windows 8 slates, tablets, PCs, a variety of different form factors.”
No details are yet available on how the new operating system would help game developers.
I've read some of the breakdowns of the leaked copies of Windows 8. They've added that horrible, useless and ugly ribbon interface to everything.
I guess, just like with office, they've run out of ideas.
I'll wait and see how the OS turns out, especially since theres a fair amount of time between the leaked copies you've apparantly read about and when its due for release.
I really hope that they are'nt just going to keep releasing replacement OS's every 3 years though, since it can take a reasonable amount of time for many users to update theirs and at this rate the product is already being outdated.
People generally like XP and 7, and don't like Vista or ME, is it safe to assume we should avoid windows 8 and wait for 9, where they get rid of all the bad new features?
With the coming of Windows 8 we will see 32bit pc's being thrown out to the curb. Windows 8 being 128 bit it'll be time to save up and get the best when it's released.
Although I do see a 2 or 3 generation of Windows 8 pc's I think the differences will be similar like ram speed, slot type, motherboard type. I think well sit on release longer than we'll be updating hardware.
