Microsoft has warned Xbox 360 users of a “potential phishing scam” occurring on Xbox Live.
The alert comes in the wake of a massive data hack on the PlayStation Network.
A Microsoft spokesperson could not be reached when contacted by Develop.
The company said Xbox Live users “may receive potential fishing [sic] attempts via title specific messaging while playing Modern Warfare 2."
The Xbox Live Status page on Xbox.com currently has issued a service alert for those playing Modern Warfare 2 online, specifically during matchmaking.
"We are aware of the problem and are working to resolve the issue,” Microsoft said.
“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience."
It is believed that Xbox Live, Xbox Live Marketplace and Account systems are operating without threat.
Phishing is a process where one individual acquires sensitive information (such as usernames, passwords and credit card details) by coaxing people to hand over their details.
Unlike the PlayStation Network hack, it is not necessarily indicative of a network flaw.
Last night Sony rocked the industry after announcing that a “malicious” attack from one individual had resulted in the data loss of millions of PlayStation Network users.
