'New controller has in-built sensor bar, features 6" touch-screen', report claims
Nintendo’s successor to the Wii is built with a “custom IBM PowerPC with three cores”, an ATI-built GPU, and at least 512MB in memory, according to new unconfirmed reports.
Nintendo has declined to comment on the validity of widespread hearsay regarding a successor to its home console.
Information on Wii 2 from several independent sources has been fed to various news sites, it is believed.
Now French technology publication 01.net has published more unconfirmed details on the device, including its rumoured internal codename, ‘Project Cafe'.
The article adds that Project Cafe will have “similar architecture” to the Xbox 360 and could support GameCube and Wii games.
A reading of the French article, from a NeoGaf forum post, suggests that Project Cafe will “support all Wii peripherals”
The post added: “CPU is custom IBM PowerPC with three cores, GPU should be an ATI from the R700 family, with a shader unit at version 4.1. Ram should be at least 512 MB.
In more far-reaching speculation, the article goes on to suggest Project Cafe will feature a touch tablet controller, with moderate graphic output, its own 6-inch single touch screen, a front camera.
01.net says the controller itself will have an in-built sensor bar,, along with sundries such as d-pad, bumpers and triggers.
The games news media has been awash with details on the new device, of which games site VG247 has collated.
News outlet Game Informer last night suggested the new Wii console supports HD resolutions, citing multiple sources.
Games blog Kotaku, claiming to have information from separate informants, said the new console appears to be comparable in hardware specs to both Xbox 360 and PS3.
UK-based website CVG, citing industry sources, has claimed the device will feature a new controller.
Entertainment site IGN said the new controller will feature touch-capabilities.
Before the announcement of current gen consoles, the revolution was rumored to be this exact same configuration ( some even said from the similarity with Microsoft hardware that it could be a "joint-venture" console ).
One thing Nintendo have to consider, if they are planning on making the 'all-powerful' Wii-HD is whether they need all that power. If they are just going to make 2D Mario and Kirby games (I.E small casual titles) then there'll be no point in another generation of console Nintendo's!
It's already been reported that they are already showing the new console to third parties specifically to have more "AAA Titles" like portal 2 and the other cross platformers out. Their CEO i think it was has also mentioned that they are going to be reaching out to third party devs because they have been too focused on on nintendo can really make money on nintendos systems idea
Nintendo can approach this from so many angles, it will be interesting to see what they do.
When will consumers be ready for the next generation of consoles? Smartphones are taking massive dents out of people's pockets already that the economics are very different from the introduction of this generation.
This generation really could last for a long period, and I don't think consumers will take to new hardware in the same way.
Yes, the iPad market were quick to embrace the minor upgrade. But they always knew and expected regular upgrades on that device. But there are key differences between the markets, buying patterns and development patterns.
What demand is there for a new console?
What do consumers want (if anything new), and how much are they willing to pay for it?
Well, to me the Wii was a big failure. But then again, I never played Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2. Nevertheless, in the past, Nintendo has always been my first choice. I'll at least give this new console a look.
So hardare on par with XB360/PS3, and a controller that appears to be 3x to 4x more complex and expensive to build, am I getting this right?
Costly main hardware and costly controller combined to make something that could output about the same games as PS3/360 with some sort of graphicsl controller that woudl have nothing to do with the 3rd party games thius thing is SUPPOSED to allow. Sorry folks, that makes no sense as a console.
If they want PS3/360/Wii-2 games to be made to the same speciication then why have a complex graphical controller that means develeopers need to spend precious time & resouces to use that controller?
This all sounds like some bad pipe-dream that a 13 y.o. boy would sketch out on his math book. Sounds cool, but makes no sense.
Hmmm. two screns work on the ds because, well, they are so close together. but looking down and back up at a tv? hmmmmmmmmmmmmm
You(commenter)'re very unimmaginating, having a touching screen on the controller can gives many new gaming possibilities, why you campare with the DS ? Also it doesn't force developper to use it, or just for the menu for example which won't need much more programming time.
And for the price, you can find 7" android tablets for only $60 then a simple touch screen of 6" can be cheap, and building a console with same specs as a xb360 today is really cheaper than several year ago, this is all the nintendo strategy, they do a the same later with innovative things when sony and microsoft just make the most powerfull possible by loosing money...
Not enough
Wii main problem was its main advantage at the same time, the controller, some games seemed like the kind of game you would see in a not to expensive cellular, way to simple to be a complete game, whereas some games were very good, graphics, lets admitted, really poor. Wii2 seems to be walking the same footsteps, Xbox 360 graphics may seem impressive right now, but when the next generation consoles come is more than like that they will all have even better graphics, as for the controllers of Wii2 it may be a good idea only if it is exploited the right way but for past experience (Wii) that’s not always the case.
I think that everyone may be over thinking the controllers possible touch screen. Sources have said that the Nintendo is considering the name Stream. If that is true, and they decided to throw that one out of many name out there for hype, think about it? It is said that "FULL" games will stream to the controller. I don't think it will be used as a peripheral or gimmick as most are thinking. Think of Nintendo's philosophy with the Wii. The channel format, trying to bring everyone in to the living room to play together. I bet you that the controllers will be personalized, somewhat like what they tried to do with Miis and color coordination. Everyone will have a controller, and they all will have access to the system, from anywhere within range. Possibly multiplayer from controllers to the console, anywhere in the house. Doesn't that make more sense here? It's almost the same philosophy as what the DS line was supposed to do! They are sticking with their format :)
People call Wii a fail when Nintendo stated that it would not compete with Microsoft and Sony and yet Nintendo still comes out on top. Now that Nintendo claims they will compete in this HD market Nintendo means business.
This is all possible seeing as the new Wii2 controllers will actually have built-in wifi for the streaming to take place.
They are however unsure of the function as it would take a decent, therefore more expensive, wifi chip in both the controller and console.
If you consider everything that's being released this is nothing close to any "pipe dream" taking into account they have just released a 3D console that doesn;t require glasses.
A holographic screen on the other hand :P
I'm thinking the 3DS,or dsi may be the controller. or maybe it's a portable and a consle all in one. I wonder if it will have tropy supprt note: i have a wii not ps3
