Neil Young highlights Microsoft as the strongest platform holder
The founder of mobile gaming outfit ngmoco has suggested that Sony's position in the hardware space is weak in contrast to its contemporaries Microsoft and Nintendo.
Speaking to IndustryGamers, Neil Young said he believed Sony is 'in trouble' insofar as console platforms are concerned, and pointed to Microsoft as the platform holder with the strongest future.
"In the hardware world, I think Sony’s massively out of position. I think they’re in trouble. I think Microsoft’s in much better shape," stated Young.
"They understand cloud computing; the Xbox Live service is a world-class service, and they’ve got a foothold in mobile, albeit a tenuous one. I think they’re in better shape," he added, before turning his attention to Nintendo.
"I think Nintendo always has the benefit of its franchises, but I don’t think it ends up being a really rich ecosystem for third parties," said the ngmoco CEO.
With the form the forthcoming consoles will take currently a relative mystery, which platform holder will enter the next generation in the strongest position is becoming an increasingly important topic.
...NGP is, on the surface, the most elegantly designed platform Sony's ever made. And moves like PlayStation Suite suggest a honest and humble understanding of market changes, a relatively much bolder move than anything MS is doing with mobile games.
I'm less worried now about Sony's grasp of platform management than I might have been 5 years ago. NGP seems like a return to form, a return to basics after PS3.
I think maybe Mr. Young is looking at the continuing fallout of the PS3, rather than future directions and what they suggest for new platforms, and Sony's next home console for example.
But what do I know?
I am not this bloke is talking any sense at all. First he mention Sony behind in the Hardware front then switch instantly to commenting on Microsoft and how they get cloud, which they do not and never has got cloud.
I agree for not Xbox has probably got a slight online service advantage but Sony has long since relies this and there online services are good to excellence anyway.
An if Sony in being left behind then Nintendo is way way behind the curve in both cloud and hardware terms.
I am not this bloke is not making any sense at all. First he mentions Sony is behind in the hardware front then switch instantly to commenting on Microsoft and how they get cloud, which they do not and have never got.
I agree Xbox has probably got a slightly better online service advantage but Sony has long since relies this, and have got there act together in this area. There online services are good to excellence and there content divisions will mean that in the future the content available on this network will only be available on this network, think films, music.
An if Sony in being left behind then Congratulation Nintendo, when they are so far behind the curve in both cloud and hardware terms just does not make sense. Nintendo is endanger of becoming a irrelevance in the market.
If anyone position poorly for the new world in Nintendo who only advantage up to last year was there motion controller, which both Sony and Microsoft not only copied but vastly improve on.
I just think this bloke clear hate for Sony is mucking up his judgement.
If I was to judge who better place for the future
the it
Sony There game network for portable gaming is looking at being hardware neutral, Quaroucity network base them on a good path to provide content on not only Sony devices but anything running Android and pretty much anything with a browser. There hardware put them in a place where they keep it in the market far longer than Micorsoft Xbox who let face when it comes to exclusives and even non exclusives is starting to look dated when compare to graphics on PS3. Why there gaming platform is over reliant on content from 3rd parties in all areas, Microsoft seem to have abandon all game development them selves. There Xbox live is also falling behind in the content area, there is way less TV and films on the system.
Nintendo is in a even worst position, the online platform in virtually non existence. There hardware is outdated compare Sony and Microsoft. There games have even started to come into criticism about lack of originality and creativity and there a lack of games on the system, especially 3rd parties games. Also the market in which Nintendo have cornered does not seem to buy many games at all, if any, many people seem happy with WII sports.
Excuse me for saying this David, but you write in a very 'eastern-English' style. So far east in fact, that I'd place you somewhere to the west of the Pacific rim. I wouldn't have mentioned it, except that you seem very pro-Sony, and your name doesn't really fit with somebody called Knowles.
And let's make my own use of English make sense:
'.. and your *language* doesn't really fit with somebody called Knowles.'
I feel after reading the comments that some of you do not understand the stance the source is taking and instead are arguing based on fan boy bias.
It does not say that Sony has fallen behind on hardware in so far as their technology used, or that Microsoft is wiping the floor of the future because of their awesome existing cloud technology.
Instead its saying that in their research looking into the future with what will potentially be the next generation of consoles they believe that Microsoft has the strongest edge to grow as a platform because they have the best online service (and they honestly do, Im impartial as a PC gamer but really, Sony's is good, Microsofts is still in a whole other category), as well as a strong software basis for future cloud interactivity and a warm welcome for 3rd party developers (not to mention indies). Sony on the other hand has a good online service but not great, their software ventures thus far have been lackluster overall in comparison (Home?!) and their 3rd party support has indeed weakened since the PS2. Nintendo on the otherhand is in decent enough position going into next gen simply because (according to the article) they have their hardy names to fall back on (mario >>>> gta) and even though their not great for 3rd partys changes are being made since the GC.
I think while some of their points can be argued, for the most part they are all very reasonable and fairly obvious to recognize.
