GDC11: UE3 DX11 capabilities unveiled

DirectX 11 support in the Unreal Engine 3 to be shown at California conference

DirectX 11 support in Epic Games’ popular Unreal Engine 3 will be shown off by the studio and technology partner Nvidia at GDC 2011 in San Francisco this week.

The engine now features DX11 tessellation, as well as support for Nvidia PhysX, Apex and 3D Vision tech.

An Unreal Engine 3 demo will be shown at GDC representing what Epic has called its ‘proposal for what the next generation of gaming will look like’.

“Thanks to Nvidia’s excellent cross-platform physics technologies and DX11 expertise, we have enhanced Unreal Engine 3 to bring unprecedented new levels of realism and demonstrate what the next generation of gaming will be,” said Epic Games VP Mark Rein.

Nvidia general manager of GPU business Drew Henry echoed the sentiment, saying: “Unreal Engine 3 continues to amaze us and represents a general leap in gaming.”

“With the addition of our PhysX, Apex and 3D Vision technologies, it will deliver unprecedented, high-end visual experiences for gamers. We can’t wait to play the games that Unreal Engine 3 will power in the future.”

UE3 complaints ...

It's upto the developers to use the engine how they want, no one is forcing them to use drab greys and browns, it's nothing wrong with the engine, just lack of imagination and creativity.

This shit has got to stop. What has happened to the creativity, and awesome art styles that once made gaming great?

Can anyone explain to me what tessellation is? It seems to 'polygonize' bump maps... or is there more to it?

DirectX11 cards can tessellate patches, which means that you can create very high level of detail models from a sparse data set - this saves storage space and bandwidth. It's scalable too - the low-end cards just won't do the tessellation.

If you want to see what creative developers with imagination can do with UE3, check out "Enslaved: Odyssey to the West" from Ninja Theory. Beautiful art.

@Louie: It doesn't need to, better graphics also means better looking awesome art styles. Look at some good CGI images on the internet, how awesome wouldn't it be if games could look like that? Realism is what the Call of Duty playing mass wants, so that's the term they're using to advertise it. Better graphics are good for all art styles, realistic or not.

We also should not forget, that both Gears of War and Unreal Tournament don't have completely realistic art styles. Epic never uses phototextures for example.

unreal engine allows you to realise any art style desirable. look at borderlands for instance. http://tinyurl.com/lubkg3

It is just that photorealismtrue cinematic quality in real time graphics is the most demanding and difficult thing to achieve and that is why it is always shown as an example of what is possible.

People seem to forget that URE3 also was used in LO on the 360 and that looks nothing like Gears though I'd like to see LO2 use the newer engine especially because of hair rendering.

Tessellation and displacement mapping = awesome.

Tessellation by itself sounds like we are talking tiles/tile sets and other old school methods.
