Studio says it is 'too small to take on a company like Capcom'
Independent studio Twisted Pixel has declined on pursuing legal action against Capcom despite making serious allegations that the publisher had “stolen” its game concept.
Twisted Pixel co-founder Michael Wilford told Joystiq that the firm was “definitely not going to pursue legal action".
The accusations arise from a Capcom game recently released on the App Store, entitled Maxplosion. It is alleged that the game has taken ideas from Twisted Pixel’s XBLA game Splosion Man.
“While I think the similarities are pretty nauseating, we're too small to take on a company like Capcom,” Wilford said.
Twisted Pixel Games programmer Mike Henry said Maxplosion “makes me sad”.
“If you're going to outright steal a game, you should at least understand what makes it fun,” he said.
Wilfrod now wants to turn attention away from the issue.
“We just need to keep our heads down making the next thing so that Capcom has something to steal next year,” he said, adding that he hopes Capcom is “not counting on the fact that indies can't fight back.”
Capcom has, for now, declined to comment on the matter. It is not proven the company has stolen Twisted Pixel’s project.
"It is not proven the company has stolen Twisted Pixel’s project."
Probably it can't be proved. But for sure Capcom creators were "deeply inspired" by the great Twisted Pixel Bestseller.
Is that punishable? In my opinion it should be. But then, what happens with all gaming world?
Think of CoD vs MoH, FIFA vs PES... Copying what works, unfortunately, is part of the "game".
From my perspective is part of the deep problem with the gaming (also extensible to films) world:
Consumers don't encourage Originality.
Just look at any sales table: Most of the games/films have a number in the end of the title.
We should force innovation with our sales. But while we buy massively CoD 4,5,6,7... No company is gonna take risks.
I say: "Buy only games with no numbers at the end of the title". Think: "Ok, this was a good game... now to something new".
"Taken ideas" ... it is called competition.
Are you aware there is more than 1 company making cars? TVs?
Ideas are two-a-penny, execution is everything.
If they did a better job they deserve the money, if you did a better job you have nothing to worry about ...
