MPs handed joypads in new Parliament event

Game showcase hoped will enlighten politicians

Gamers’ Voice, the UK-based lobby group, has arranged a House of Commons event where MPs will be invited to play various games.

Already set to attend is Culture Minister Ed Vaizey and Tory MP John Whittingdale, the Select Committee chairman for the Culture Department.

Politicians of all parties are invited to attend the January 12.

Trade body UKIE is also expected to attend.

The aim of the event is to “generate positive publicity for video games and the PEGI system soon to be coming into force”, read a statement from Gamers’ Voice.

The group added: “It is clear to us that some members of Parliament are clearly out of touch with the public and wrongly believe that video games are corrupting British children.

“The recent release of new forms of motion control make this a great time to get MPs back on board with the industry after a difficult 6 month period. Put simply, if they won’t come to us, we’re taking the games to them.”

Gamers’ Voice has 16,500 people signed up to its Facebook page.

Please don't sugar coat this

Please don't this end up being a bunch of politicians playing Mario Kart Wii and Kinect bowling.

The average gamer is an adult and the industry should feel free to produce adult games, just like the film and TV industry can do.

The majority of my games collection has 15 and 18 ratings and this is an important part of the industry, if they ignore this then there's no point to this effort.

I'm sure this is a good idea, but...

All very nice, but make sure you count the controllers back in after handing them out.

And I do hope the MPs are also given receipts so that they can "legitimately" claim for attending the event. Wouldn't want them to miss out on their handouts, oops, expenses, poor wee creatures that they are.

After all, they've done so much for the industry, like organising those tax breaks we were all promised before the election.

Don't worry

Don't worry, we're not going to let this become a kiddy glove event, video games cater for everyone and we want to show that. While we will have Kinect and Move on show we also plan to showcase games which impress with hard hitting storylines like Heavy Rain.
