Autodesk used in race to build Assassin’s Creed

Ubisoft reveals license deal with 3ds Max, Motion Builder and Human IK

Ubisoft turned to a range of Autodesk tools to develop its latest Assassin’s Creed title under unique time constraints.

The publisher had five studios collaborate for the latest title – released less than twelve months after its predecessor.

Autodesk licensed out its 3ds Max and Motion Builder software for Ubisoft-hired artists to build the game’s environments in record time.

Its Human IK middleware was also integrated into Ubisoft’s Anvil engine for various animation enhancements.

Danny Oros, technical art director for the project, said the tools “helped us create a huge amount of great content in a short amount of time”.

He added: “We knew that with Human IK we could address our inverse kinematics challenges quickly without sacrificing results or performance”.

Earth shattering

What's even more epic is how the game was released "before its predecessor", making it, I believe, the first sequel to ever come out before the original.

Wouldn't the Star Wars games have that honour? ;)

@MPS: As a developer and user of Autodesk products, I in fact find it extremely interesting.

I certainly find it more interesting than another story using the same old "pre-owned", "tax breaks" headlines.

I wish there were more like this... MCV is after all, for ALL of the games industry... so surely, that should include news for those rather significant people... the developers.

Yeah I know you're not a fan of tax break news, or even Tiga's push for it, Lee.

You were actually one of the people I was thinking of when preparing for our new interview with Richard Wilson - hope I at least represented some of your views with that one.

Once again, 3dsmax delivers superior quality in very short time and human IK proves to be a lifesaver! Way to go! I'd love to know more!

It would be great to see HumanIK as part of 3dsmax like it was in the past.

3D Max is definately the way to go when working with Motionbuilder. We use both products and found our animations are as smooth as silk and easy to implement. Autodesk will keep setting the bar in the future.
