The Unreal Engine flaunts its power on iPhone and iPad

Epic Citadel App Store downloads hit 1m

Epic Games’ first foray into the App Store business has returned some positive numbers.

The company’s vice president Mark Rein has revealed that Epic Citadel – the group’s debut iPhone and iPad app – has been downloaded over a million times.

Epic Citadel is a public tech demo of the firm’s game engine for mobile devices. The tech boasts parallax mapping, texture blending, global illumination tech (Unreal Lightmass), dynamic specular lighting with texture masks, and real-time reflections and animation.

The app, which is free, is the backbone tech to Project Sword; an upcoming iPhone and iPad game in development at Epic internal studio Chair Entertainment.
