Could it be that this is the game that MechScape never was?

Jagex to launch new MMO Stellar Dawn

Browser developer and publisher Jagex has this morning revealed that it is to release a new sci-fi themed MMO named Stellar Dawn.

The huge Cambridge studio behind RuneScape and portal Funorb promises its forthcoming title will deliver players a substantial science fiction narrative and a variety of gameplay styles.

Due out in 2011, Stellar Dawn will be available to play on both high and low spec PCs and Macs. Like RuneScape, the MMO will harness the power of Jagex’s proprietary online-games platform. A large chunk of the game will be playable free of charge.

“Stellar Dawn will be Jagex’s biggest release to date and everyone at the studio is absolutely electric with excitement as we enter the final stages of development,” said Mark Gerhard, Jagex CEO.

“We are really happy with how well Stellar Dawn has come together. The team has deftly blended art, content and technology to provide the entertaining, long-term game appeal that we have become famous for. As we approach the public launch next year we will be revealing many more details about the game to the community on stellardawn.com.”

As of yet, nothing is know of Stellar Dawn’s relation to Jagex’s scrapped MMO MechScape. At the start of this year Gerhard told Develop that the time and resources put into MechScape would still be used as part of a later online game.

Back then, Gerhard told Develop: "I think it’s very realistic that a year or so from now, we could have a game. Hey – maybe it will be even sooner.”
