3D character animation tool retools in favour of Unity tech

Mixamo adopts Unity Web Player

Web-based 3D character animation service Mixamo has retooled its 3D character animation tool to use the Unity Web Player instead of its previous Java-based solution.

In addition Mixamo, which is designed to make animating characters rapid and relatively effortless, has added several new features that cater specifically to Unity users. Furthermore, the San Francisco company has made a host of resources available to further streamline the process of character animation.

"After extensive user testing, we found the Unity Web Player to be a superior experience for our users, many of whom are part of the 30 million people who already have the Unity Web Player installed," enthused Mixamo CTO Stefano Corazza.

“With Mixamo and Unity, we have streamlined the playable character creation pipeline which is a huge benefit to game developers. We are excited to partner with Unity because we share the same vision for the democratization of 3D game development which benefits the entire industry.”

"We’re happy to have this vote of confidence from Mixamo and excited by the features that they’ve added that not only create specific added value to Unity users but also improved value to their non-Unity users," added David Helgason, CEO of Unity Technologies.

The new Maximo features include the option of Unity characters viewable directly in the Mixamo editor, the use of Unity’s Web Player as Mixamo’s 3D viewer, and support for downloading the ‘FBX for Unity’ file format
