PS Move ‘offers huge change to the shooter genre’

PS Move ‘offers huge change to the shooter genre’

New Sony peripheral devs seek to reinvent one of the most popular genres in gaming

Elliot Martin, producer of the upcoming Move-ready SOCOM title, has told Develop he believes the new peripheral will bring about “huge change” to the shooter genre.

“With the Move controller what it allows us to do with SOCOM is have the player basically point at enemies on screen with Move as if they were aiming with a real gun in their hand,” he said.

“It’s a huge change to the genre because rather than having to move the camera, you can just point and shoot. I think Move is going to make that style of game a lot more accessible to a lot more people.”

Speaking exclusively to Develop in an interview with several of Move’s starting developers, Martin also described the process of creating a ‘hardcore’ FPS with what are generally thought of as casual controls.

“We were hesitant because we thought a new control system meant that we would completely have to redesign the game. Actually, the basic implementation was up and running in a matter of just a few hours,” he said.

“Not only did it work, but it was immediately very intuitive, and it didn’t require any great change of mindset. It was very easy to pick up and play.”

For Socom? A Tactical 3rd Person shooter? I don't know about you guys but I am sticking with my classic Dule Shock 3 controller. I've only been using it since Socom 1! Also I've played COD4 on the Nintendo Wii Online not that great with the whole motion control bs.

ALL the PS Move is doing is making games like socom more casual and easier. Gameplay is going to be shit now because of it. I am telling you know, Socom 4 will NOT feel like a socom game...

Move Will Improve

I disagree with both of you... For one, Move has already proven to be far more responsive and accurate than the Wii or wiimotes. So Matt, your argument doesn't hold up for even a second. And John (lol, I love Lost too), I'm sure there will be A LOT of gamers that agree with you. But there will also be a lot that prefer Move... MOST hardcore gamers agree that these types of games are better with a mouse & keyboard... Move is the FIRST controller that will be able to give a similar level of control on a console. So Move players will probably be the ones calling dual shock users casuals and noobs! :-P

"Move has already proven to be far more responsive and accurate than the Wii or wiimotes."

Depends who you listen too..you have to remember there are many magazine editors who have barely touched the Wii.

An IGN editor which alot of experience with the Wii had this to say about Move (in March)-

" as something of a Wii veteran with a firm understanding of how pointer and gestural controls work and how games should feel when they are properly finessed. I'm not impressed."

"PS3 Move features almost no latency -- just one frame -- but that paper truth didn't seem to translate to reality as I played with the controller at Sony's event. Most of the stuff played like first-generation Wii efforts from third-parties."

"The company's shooter feels laggy and unresponsive as I attempt to gun down robotic targets. The boxing game is not one-to-one, but gestural-based, and slow. Nearly everything feels redone, but somehow half-baked."

I'm a hardcore gamer. I've had the Move since launch day. I played The Shoot demo a number of times. Seems pretty damn responsive to me. I plan on getting The Shoot. I'm real happy with Move so far and that's all I care about.

One more thing

I can play Killzone 3 with the dualshock, then play a different game, then come back and play Killzone 3 again with the Move for a whole different experience. I get more bang for my buck.

Is it possible for a hardcore gamer to enjoy a casual game now and then? Yes it is. Sports Champions proved that to me already. When you've played 5 hardcore shooters in a row, ping pong and frisbee golf on Sports Champions using an accurate motion controller that gives you a very different experience, is a welcome change. For no other reason, Move gives hardcore gamers more options and variety. They can take it...or they can leave it. Sounds like a good deal to me.

After playing games like Bocce, disc golf, ping pong, it would suck now to hit the square button to put spin on the ball. Now with Move I just twist my wrist like you would naturally.
