“Eight and nine year-olds playing 3D is a little bit of a stretch”
With 3D gaming still in its infancy, Nintendo’s surprise announcement of the 3DS yesterday marks a surprise new direction for the technology – and it’s one that has failed to convince SCEA’s director of hardware and marketing John Koller.
“I think it remains to be seen where Nintendo goes with 3D on a portable,” he told IGN.
“Having been in the portable space for quite a while, I think it's an interesting move but one I'd like to see where they go from a demographic standpoint. Eight and nine year-olds playing 3D is a little bit of a stretch given where some of our research is right now.”
Koller went on to assert that Sony’s 3D focus remains fixed on PS3.
"3D is rubbish...unless we're doing it. I don't think the little babies that play the DS will be able to handle the awesomeness"
@ BC: i see your point and kinda agree, but the price point, which remains to be seen, will be the deciding factor. if parents can afford to buy their kids a 3DS then it'll sell but if it's the kinda price that means it's kinda exclusive then it'll be a bit more tricky. Nintendo don't seem to do pricey tho so i think it'll be the next fad and make a good go of it.
i think Koller's a bit jelous given the PSP, of which i am a supporter, is stuggling AND loosing market share.
also he should be supporting the 3D tech and hyping how it's gonna be the future of gaming and then ride that wave when they release their 3D update for the PS3.
i don't think it's a case of babies not being able to handle the awesomeness, i seem to remember enjoying the Tomy 3D-Tronics when i was a kid, but it may be a case of babies not being able to afford the awesomeness.
So you think that 9 year olds playing 3d is a bit much, yet you and your SONY cohorts specifically said you are going after the same group of said 9 year olds with the move controller which is tied to what.....your PS3 which you are using to push 3D. SO it's ok for them to do 3D on your console but not ok for Nintendo???
I have kids and when I show them something in 3D they don't really respond any differently to if it were 2D. They expect things to be in 3D. It's how things are in real life so why not on a screen?
If you think about it seeing something that is supposed to be 3D but is flattened onto a 2D screen is a much harder thing to comprehend than a 3D image that is being displayed on a 3D.
I believe kids will transition to 3D much better than adults, who 'may' get disorientated, confused or become uncomfortable with the change from what they know and are used to.
