[Update] Debug PS3s hit by system errors

Debug units unworkable due to endlessly looping error message

[Update: The PS3's internal clock issue is said to be resolved]

Various developers and studios are claiming that their debug PS3 units are failing from suspected internal-clock-related hardware errors.

A multitude of debug consoles – crucial to the development of current PS3 projects – have been thrown into a rebooting cycle, due to an endlessly-looping error message.

The issue comes as a separate issue is affecting retail PS3 consoles, though both problems are thought to be related.

It is said that when certain PS3 retail consoles attempt to connect to the internet, the platform shows error messages and are unable to connect to the PlayStation Network.

Sony has already claimed it has narrowed down possible causes for the retail problem and is working on a solution.

However, a Joystiq report has been flooded by claims that even offline consoles are being struck down – with the system’s clock reverting to 12/31/1999 and causing data-corrupting errors.

Sony has declined to comment.

the problem is that the ps3 thinks its a leap year and that's causing the dates to go wrong and things not to work

It's Y2K, just a little late and with the wrong date, but still, it's the computer's clock reverting to an earlier date and it messing things up.

Testing

At this current time we do know that pulling the internal battery that operates the clock, leaving it off for 10 minutes, then placing it back in WILL reset the time format and correct the problem. HOWEVER, Sony DOES NOT SUGGEST you to do this, as this will void your warranty.

The second testing phase is reformatting. At the moment I'm in the process of doing a total reformat over-hall on the PS3 system. I doubt this will fix anything, as this does not reset the date/time internal flash memory for the PS3. I'll re-post here again on updates in about 10 more minutes.

Full system format complete. Unfortunately, it did not erase the corruption error code '8001050F'. Do not attempt to do a full system format, I only did this so other's will know if it is okay to do so. If you do wish to format, please back up all save files, and B.C (Backwards Compatability) save files on a flash disk, or memory card, before reformatting.

Unfortunately it would, Matt. I am not taking the chance to pull the internal battery, though. I wouldn't suggest you do it either, if you don't want your warranty voided.

If there are other methods that you all know about, but do not want to try on your own, feel free to post them to me either here, or my personal email: caltosy@vzw.blackberry.net - I will do the honor of checking out those theories so nothing can happen to your own console(s).

[sarcasm]... after their "The next generation starts with us" failed so badly, they're having a go at resetting the millennium instead, so they can say "The next millennium starts when we say so." [/sarcasm]

RobbieP: If this is a manufacturing defect, which it will be if it is a calendar bug, then they will have no option but to replace them at their cost, or fix them, at their cost. This isn't a wear and tear breakdown/fault, the is faulty at manufacture.

Under UK law, the product has to be free from manufacturing defect for 6 years, as was discovered when Game were hauled on Watchdog over the 360 RROD problem. If they try and pull the "you'll have to buy a new one", then there will be a massive hate campaign which they won't want to be part of.

Found a fix

After excessive playing about with my console I have found a solution!

You need a fast upload broadband connection and some skills... It would also help if you are familiar on how to connect a console directly to the internet via Ethernet like lets say an Xbox. You also need a hammer to make a slight adjustment...

First of all plug an Xbox in and connect it to Xbox Live as you would. Secondly take the hammer and strike the PS3 as hard as you can. Now your problem is fixed!

Have fun, play more, Xbox.

To confirm from KG, yes the error '8001050F' has been lifted. Took about 24 hours for it to clear.

A few things to take note: Please make sure you re-sync your trophy list. Just hit the triangle over the Trophy folder and go to sync. This will give you the latest info as well as updating the servers with the latest info.

Not sure if this was an auto-correction (24 hours) or Sony did something - Which I don't think Sony did as I had my PS3 disconnected.

I've been playing GTA4, which needs online activation for Trophy support. But now, even when im offline, GTA's trophy list has totaly disappeared!!!

I hope now they've fixed the bug they'll come back, else i'll demand Sony give me back all those trophies!!!

Oh well, at least we don't have to put up with rings of death and microsoft's arrogant attitude! xD
