id Software co-founder John Carmack will be honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at GDC in March for his outstanding influence on and contributions to the game development sector.
Carmack is verging on veteran status after developing games since the late eighties. He built the foundations of the first-person shooter genre, with seminal titles such as Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake.
He will join other GDC Lifetime Achievement Award winners such as Sid Meier, Shigeru Miyamoto and Will Wright.
Carmack will pick up the prize at the ceremony on March 11.
