Rebellion elated with AvP sales, wants sequel

CEO Jason Kingsley happy with most reviews of the title

Longstanding UK developer Rebellion has revealed its delight after new release Aliens Versus Predator shot to number one in the UK charts.

And the studio told Develop that it’s keen to progress negotiations with Sega for a sequel to the game.

“We’re delighted to see the game shoot to the top of the UK charts,” said company co-founder and CEO Jason Kingsley, speaking from Paris.

“We wanted Aliens Versus Predator to be a critical success as well as a commercial success, which we think we have achieved.

“We’re also in discussions with Sega about ongoing support for AvP, and also about a sequel to the game,” he added.

“I won’t say what stage those negotiations are in, but we would love to revisit the franchise. Fox are excited about what we’re doing, and we feel we’ve added value to the franchise.

“We would love to work with Sega again, there were a lot of things we couldn’t fit into the original. We are trying to do all the right things to make the franchise a success now and in the future.”

Aliens Versus Predator’s commercial success is great news for the British development industry, which is currently fighting for producion tax breaks to remain more globally competitive.

AvP may offer a view of what can be done if the sector is fully supported.

Developed at Rebellion’s Oxford-based studio, AvP has become the UK’s fastest-selling new release of 2010 – even outpacing Mass Effect 2, built by Canadian outfit BioWare.

And AvP’s success comes hot on the heels of Londoners Rocksteady taking three AIAS Awards for Batman Arkham Asylum.

“We’ve always of course been concerned with the UK dropping down the global league in terms of sales of UK-developed games, so it’s great to see AvP’s response,” Kingsley addd.

“The UK isn’t the cheapest place to develop games, but it’s definitely not the most expensive. So, fingers crossed, the success of AvP may help the UK get noticed a bit more right now.“

Kingsley said he was generally happy with the game’s critical response.

“The reviews have been mostly good,” he said. “We’ve had three totally shit reviews by some Americans, which is a bit odd. Some of them were inexcusably bad.

“If you discount those poor reviews AvP is averaging high for us.

“Obviously in the past we’ve had constraints put on us, meaning we’ve released games that we wanted to spend a bit more time on, which have critically been a bit underwhelming. That’s always a shame.”

Kingsley confirmed he was referring to recent release Rogue Warrior when citing those constraints.

“We do the best we can given the circumstances, and hopefully we have enough time to make the best game we possibly can, and that’s what happened with AvP.

“With Rogue Warrior, we did the best we could in the timeframe, and I doubt anyone could do any better given the circumstance."

Everyone who has played the old ones on the PC, probably will like this new game. I did and i like it. Its not a perfect game, but it does a good job. If you are waiting for the next MW2 or Halo or anything like that, you won't find it here.
It plays different and if you learn the mechanics and understand the new melee attacks you will like it as much as we do.

There are things that i dont like as much, like the fact that there are no classes, just skins that you are unlocking gaining XP points. It would be nice to see at least a multiplayer mode where each alien or predator or marine had different abilities (if we are talking about the aliens...speed & power...),and different weapons (for predator and marines) (like they had in the older games) I miss Ichiro :)

At the end its a good game and i know if they implement those little things...it will be great.
You should at least rent it and give it a try.

Dedicated servers

The most galling thing about the current AvP is the lack of dedicated server availability for the PC version.

Yet another bad console port.

Fine for singleplayer.

Unplayable multiplayer.

This is wonderful news to hear. I only hope they release some modding tools to tide us over until the sequel. The current game is fun in its own right but i find it somewhat lacking compared to its predecessors. Many things were missing but this is easily fixable via DLC or mods. Maybe they'll add them in to the sequel. My favorite thing about AvP2 was starting out as a lowly facehugger and going through the aliens lifecycle.

According to steam I've only spent 90mins playing this game. That surprised me as I thought it was very poor. Worst game I've played this, and probably last year unfortunately.

Glad my purchase supports the UK industry but its really a smack in the face of people who spend money for unfinished games (no dedicated server support on release? oh dear!) that are no where near good enough for the standards of games in this day and age.

There are a lot of worse games out there that I've had the good fortune to avoid but this is barely a 3 out of 10 game for me.

Release now, fix later mentality...

Chris, this is unfortunately an all too common scenario. Because of the connectivity of most things these days, devs/publishers have jumped on the chance of releasing broken products to get people's money, apologising profusely (as though it's something they didn't know about) and then promising to fix it later...

Unless of course, you're EA, and it's a Fifa game (like 10 for instance), in which case, you'll hide behind some excuse, refuse to fix it and rely on people buying the next £40 game instead. But in the interim, you'll (amazingly) find enough time to release another paid-for add-on, that people will be gullible enough to buy.

If someone punches you in the face, you either put your face back for another punch, or you turn round and walk away.

For some bizarre reason, gamers just keep putting their face back and the companies throwing the punches, just keep on laughing as the money rolls in. Me... I just laugh back as I pull the used game off the shelf.

Even though I have been a long term developer, I refuse to accept that people should pay good money, for broken goods. You wouldn't accept a broken TV, so why should you accept broken software?

"If you discount those poor reviews AvP is averaging high for us."

Is this bloke serious?

I'll do a mini review that will be added to the list of "shit" he speaks of:
Single Player=Lazy development, and reuse of maps. Ridiculously weak predator, ridiculously strong alien, ridiculously weak marine.
All of these have a reason though, all of the "balancing" was done around multiplayer, so next time you are raped by multiple aliens, think of that and find comfort.

The alien being strong is ok, but the retarded AI of the marines that MARCH to the hissing is just flat out dumb. The alien campaign even in the highest of difficulties is just easy.

The Marine has it fairly easy, up until you start to encounter multiple aliens without the all too obvious "SHOOT HERE TO MAKE THIS EXPLODE". The "boss" fight was decent, the rest was rather bland, and the lack of "Journal Key" (Bioshock/Bioshock 2 anyone?) and continual pauses kills any sort of terror that was building up.

And the Predator...oh god...well I'll leave it at that.

So here we can scratch out Singleplayer as the reason to buy this game.

Now, Multiplayer, here is where its fun...when it works :

All things considered if you get a multiplayer game going, and that works, you might as well consider buying yerself for some lottery tickets.

No host migration contribute to a lot of frustration that players have, if you are doing TOO GOOD and your host decides to ragequit, you lose the game(and the XP).

With a matchmaking system that just doesn't work, a lack of host migration, and the unbearable lag, I think its safe to say, hold on to your money for at least another good 3 months. And read player reviews again, see if the game improved at all, if not, don't bother with this one, it still needs cookin'.

PS:
The reviews were pretty bad considering the profile of the game, lets face it, the highest it ever scored was on the "Official Xbox Magazine" and they suck for reviews.

This Game Rocks Tits. If you dont like it then you piss off and buy another game. if you wanna burn a game down because of a few FIXABLE bugs you might as well burn every game down but oh wait that would take your biased away welp looks like ive made point.

Aliens vs. Predator is a fun game in multiplayer...it's alright in single player. It lacks many things. I have a problem quantifying those things, it's mostly just a matter of feeling it. First off, I love the Aliens and Predator universes, I always have, I was brought up during the time of their most success, during the 80's. But this game lacks something...it's far...FAR...FARRRRRRRRRR too linear. When I load up a predator...I want to go to a planet I've never seen before to track something down, whether it be a drug lord or a politician...as an alien, I want to find myself on a strange planet bent with possibilities to breed....as a marine, I want to fix those problems, but NOT COMPLETELY ALONE THE ENTIRE GAME. Aliens Vs. Predator is a decent game, but that's all it is. DECENT. I want an ENGROSSING experience in the predator, alien, and marine world, and this game simply doesn't do it. It's just a new paint job on an old game. PERIOD.

as someone who barely touched the last avp games and as someone who rarely plays online i have to say that the game (single player) was pretty good, there are areas to improve upon and i think a sequel would give them a chance to do that as for multiplayer i havent touched it yet

i love the combat dynamics .. can we improve and expand upon this next game and also expand and improve menus and visual things like seeing your own character -- perhaps classes or setups .. etc ... types of pred .. / alien .. marine .. remove alot of auto locking weapons etc .. and make it more acurate .. when u get good and take on multiple players .. its crucial and by making it more acurate will improve the gameplay 10 fold!! .... I am in a Clan with this game and love it .. please expand on this ... (ps am a PC player) also improve and make various more modes .. and improve dedicated servers ... and make more user friendly .. and customisable ... perhaps make it play faster .. ie make it run more efficient so slower PC's can cope it seems u must require the latest PC's to play it -- thus offering more playability to a wider audience and improving the whole gameplay as a whole..
