Unite conference keynote unveils 'freemium' engine deal

Engine firm Unity Technologies has made the Indie version of its Unity engine available for free.

Previously sold for $200, Unity Indie has also been renamed simply 'Unity', with the $1500 version remaining as 'Unity Pro'.

“Now anyone can create interactive content with a best of breed tool without any financial barrier,” the firm said, writing for Develop in a new regular feature about its technology, due to be published soon on this website.

The new pricing comes into effect with version 2.6 of the engine and was announced at the firm’s yearly conference, Unite, which took place today in San Francisco.

We’ll be reporting from Unite all this week.

Unity investing in the future

This is wonderful news!

I have no remorse at all with having invested in Indy two years ago, and I plan to upgrade to Pro asap with the new discount available.

I have many friends who are creative and intelligent, but know practically nothing about computers. I can't imagine anything more exciting than being able to get them started with a tool as powerful as Unity without them having to make (what for them would be) a very significant investment.

This was a very good move Unity. I can't wait for it to benefit you immensely a couple years from now when all the kids who learned so much with your free tool start building real stuff and dominating the industry :)

I announced this to my Unity game's community last night, and have already received tons of positive responses! http://marsxplr.com/view-5832

As a programmer that's interesting that Unity is now offering basic for free, well it was only $200. I am wondering how much they will charge for the support. And $1,500 isn't that bad for Pro, but I have heard that MysticGD is going to announce a new program for iPhone, with a new version that will make Unity users take notice. And yes girls can program!!!!!
