PS3 awaits price cut as stock is suspended

Retail expects September promotion as supply channels run dry

Rumours and speculation have been rife for many weeks now, but MCV can reveal that Sony is clearing PS3 hardware stock from the UK ahead of what is expected to be a new price point introduced from early September.

A press conference at the Gamescom event in Cologne next Tuesday (August 18th) is expected to provide details of the price cut – and possibly the launch of the rumoured redesigned PS3 Slim.

Why clear existing stock?

Why would they need to clear existing stock ahead of a price cut?

This is something that is only done ahead of a hardware model change as there is surely no guarantee that shops will be able to shift their old stock before the price reduction comes into effect.

I'll be interested to see what exactly Sony has planned for September. A PS3 slim and light perhaps....yes I know that's unlikely!

If they're letting the channel run dry they are either planning a substantial hardware change (e.g. the Slim) or getting out of the biz entirely.
I don't think Sony is going to quit, so maybe the Slim rumors are correct.
