Epic Games ponders Natal integration

Epic Games ponders Natal integration

Bleszinski suggests merging classic controls with Natal features

Epic Games ‘will take a look at Natal’ for possible game development, said the company’s design director Cliff Bleszinski.

Speaking to Develop in an interview available now, Bleszinski said that Microsoft’s new interface model has given him ideas for new games.

“As game creators, anytime we see new tech like that the ideas always come out. I can’t go into the ones I’ve had because, obviously, someone else might do it.

“Y’know, we’ll take a look at Natal - no promises - but it’s likely that the classic control interface is what Epic will be working on in the foreseeable future.”

However, the Gears of War franchise creator added that a Natal-powered game doesn’t necessarily have to completely reject classic controls.

“I think there’s ways that you could merge the two interfaces and supplement a classic game with Natal controls to make something compelling,” he said.

I think a hybrid control system is a great first step into integrating Natal's alternative interface in to widely released games. It minimizes the risk of failure due to lack of proliferation of the ancillary hardware needed. If the integrated games allow standard controlers to play side-by-side with the new natal driven interfaces, I think it will help spawn a positive competitive climate for the integration of the new hardware. - FB
