Nintendo keen to partner with third party studios

‘Excited’ US boss Fils-Aime says surprise alliance with Team Ninja for new Metroid game could be first step in new strategy

Nintendo is “excited” by the prospect of working with more third party developers, following its partnership with Team Ninja on new title Metroid Other M.

Nintendo Of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime said he was looking forward to third-party studios contacting the firm with pitches – and publishing their games under the Nintendo brand.

In a video interview with Gamespot, he said:

“We could have done a fine job on our own [with Metroid Other M], but we saw Team Ninja as a way to add a little extra ‘special sauce’, if you will.

“One of the pieces of feedback I’ve heard since  is that when we made that announcement, there were a lot of development teams and publishers who started to say to themselves: ‘Wow! Nintendo is open to these partnerships. Let’s think of other ideas that we can bring forward.’ I find that exciting.”

Team Ninja reminds me of Rare quite a lot when they moved over to Microsoft:

The most important parts of the team had aready left, and what you hadleft was a brand. Now I'm no fan of the Team Ninja brand anyway, never liked thier work, but I think entrusting a franchise like Metroid with them - even if there were no walkouts - is a big, big risk.
