E3 ’09 But not Microsoft’s, nor Nintendo’s – understandable or unreasonable?
As part of its broad strategy to expand on the number of things residents can do on PlayStation Home, Sony has announced it will be streaming footage of E3 into its virtual world.
Home users will be able to watch the Sony press conference, virtually together, in front of a jumbo screen.
However Sony will only begin to offer video footage from June 2, the day of its conference and one day after Microsoft’s own.
If a consumer purchases a PS3, downloads Home and decides to use it to obtain E3 info, is it not likely that this person is utterly enthusiastic about videogames, and would want to see more than one perspective on the biggest event in the gaming calendar?
Perhaps it’s unfair to disapprove of Sony’s ambition to succeed against the competition, but if people want to know about what Nintendo and Microsoft is up to, they will inevitably find out for themselves.
In removing important E3 events from Home, Sony may have missed a real chance on channelling new users into its intriguing online world.
Home users can watch and discuss Sony’s E3 happenings in the PlayStation Events Space’s Presentation Podium.
It's pretty naive to expect Sony to host - and promote - the efforts of their competitors.
Similarly Microsoft puts its own conference on XBL every year, but it doesn't provide coverage of its competitors.
The podium space in Home looks very much to be designed around Sony's E3 showing. Seems there might be some locked areas relating to some of Sony's games there. It's understandable that it'll be about Playstation stuff.
You couldn't really expect them to promote their competitors, could you? They're not claiming to provide comprehensive coverage of E3 at the show, just of Playstation at E3.
I'd actually want to check this out if I had a PS3 (now waiting for the Slim).
The thing is, I feel we are being treated a bit like children, being restricted of things that we want to see even though we are gonna watch it anyway
But year your probably right, would be a bad business move.
Sky hosts BBC One,
Microsoft releases iPhone apps,
Hitler and Stalin win the first half of WW2,
And Sony's being smart here?
A better comparison would be a Honda dealer stocking Toyota brochures while the Motor Show is on... Not going to happen.
I think the real question is if Ferdinand is smart?
i know i would not help the competition, neither promote their my competition, sure sony is in the right path.
and for "Microsoft releases iPhone apps" well sony sell every vaio with Microsoft Windows... but thats different like kevling pointed out, he is smart not like Ferdinand sadly
You have your opinions, I have mine, but I fail to see how I can take your's seriously if you're willing to call me stupid based on a single comment.
My thought is that Sony's move is a uderstandable, legacy practice. Dont mention the competition!
But just becase it's a practiced move doesn't mean it's a smart one....
Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, Apple - all the ****ers need to reflect the views of the public a bit more, not consistently and POINTLESSLY try to deflect them.
Look at this:
How many people have Sony stopped from watching MS's E3 conf?
How many people has Sony prevented from going to Home to watch E3 coverage?
E3 is not news.
E3 is an advertisement.
Do you expect Ford.com to broadcast Hyundai's appearance at autoshows?
No.
