Resident Evil 5 producer 'worried' about Western devs

Resident Evil 5 producer 'worried' about Western devs

Japan is 'last big market' for foreign studios, says Takeuchi

Jun Takeuchi, producer of Resident Evil 5, has admitted that he is 'worried' about the impact Western developers will have in Japan this year.

When asked by Famitsu what he thought 2009 would bring, Takeuchi said: "I'm worried about the movements of Western developers. Japan is now their target - it's the last big marketplace. The truth is that Western studios are making great games, and they're going to continue to do so next year too.

But Takeuchi also has hopes for an improvement in Japan's domestic games market: "It's not good if Japanese developers are making games that can't be enjoyed by Japanese people. I hope that 2009 is a year where developers - not just Capcom, but other makers too - can have big hits that improve the Japanese games industry as a whole.

"2009 will also see Resident Evil 5 finally released, and it'll also then see us on to our next step. We haven't shown what Capcom has in store for 2009 yet, so I hope we can surprise you all soon."

I'm worried Resident Evil 5 is going to be a prettied up Resident Evil 4... but with more AI babysitting... sounds boring. I have a feeling Res 5 is going to be a flop and forgotten when the likes of the Halo expansions come out, Killzone 2, Alan Wake... games like that are movers... Res 5 is shake and bake... seriously ninja gaiden sucked, soul caliber blew, the square rpgs that have come out already fro 360 blew... see where I'm going... a lot of shake and bake coming out of Japan. Metal Gear was really kewl but it wasn't anything NEW... LBP and Fallout 3, the music band games... those are a lot of fun and something relatively different... Alan Wake, Heavy Rain, MAG... hint hint... japanese devs... take some risks try something new

Jed, the odds of Alan Wake (whenever it comes out) and Heavy Rain flopping are damned good. They are quite different from what is the new norm, and gamers in general are resistant to change no matter where they are at.
And as for ANY shooter, when they stop sucking at Halo's teat, give me a call. Halo was a monsterous change from other fps at the time of it's release. Now the change, the different, has become the expected.
In the end, I want well-crafted games, not made for blockbuster games like the ****e music that gets play on the radio. Games like Left 4 Dead and Valkyria Chronicles are what I want to see being pushed. And fighters with a semblance of balance, not pretty features to hide their lack of depth.

Actually, I played the Resident Evil 5 demo...And it is far from AI babysitting. Sheva can really take care of herself, when they don't make you push her into a room with like 20 of the little jerks you have to help kill. But the game does feel like just a lame addon to Resident Evil 4, it may look nicer, but it feels the same. There's nothing new. :
