SCE UK boss Ray Maguire says more third parties will embrace PS3 as lead development platform
The boss of Sony Computer Entertainment UK Ray Maguire has stated that he believes third party developers will in future use PS3 as their lead platform and then remove elements of their titles when porting across to Xbox 360.
Speaking to Videogamer, Maguire stated: “I think we now have an install base which is big enough for any third party to want to develop for. Now the decision making part of development is which do you lead your development on?
“Is it easier to lead with the most powerful, both in terms of AI and graphics, i.e. PS3 and then just remove part of the functionality for the processors that aren't quite as strong? I would imagine that's very much part of the thought process now from a studio development point of view.”
Multi-Format Developers historically Lead with the weakest platform.
a programmer of vast experience told me its best to do ps3 as lead because its much easier to convert ps3 to 360 than to convert 360 to ps3 because the ps3 is more complicated
Sony: Developers will downgrade 360 titles ....
... so they will run on the PS3
:)
Well I don't really care which platform they use as the primary for dev, who does. As long as the games get made does it really matter! They can program it on a C64 for all that it matters!!!
However, if you start getting a considerable difference in features and the like between a game release on one console compared to another (like Mr Sony is suggesting up there) then there'd better be a price difference to match. I'm not paying the same £40 for a one version of a game when the other version has considerably more. That just wouldn't be fair to the gamers. Anyway, if they're talking about dev on the leading setup shouldn't that be a PC. A top end gaming PC wipes the florr with all consoles and always will!
The PC isn't really stable enough to work on as your first platform. You'd develop on 360 because it's a set system, port it over easily and tidy up.
I don't think the lead platform is a matter of catering for the least powered system, than the most popular system. It just so happens that these machines tend to be one and the same ...coincidence?
Probably not, because a machine that can do 90% of what the other can do but for half the price (or less) will be more popular.
(this is generalities, don't go all fan-boy-ish)
