
Develop technology editor Jon Jordan surveys third-party engines
While many headlines in games development news might be grabbed by the likes of Epic's Unreal 3 and id's Tech 5, there are game engines available for all sorts of different projects, Jon Jordan says in this month's technology guide.
Available to read here, the guide covers five major players - Qubesoft, Crytek and Emergent as well as old favourites Epic and id.
"When it comes to any sort of engine, sheer horsepower
generally wins out, and that seems to be the priority in terms of the big studio-wise deals publishers are signing up for," says author Jon Jordan, Develop's technology editor, in the guide which profiles the various features of each technology.

What I'd like to hear is what studios that have used the differing engines say about them 'off the record.' That's really what counts therwise you're comparing apples and pears. Unreal, for instance, has an excellent reputation for building first person shooters but what would it be like for an MMORG or a driving game or a god game? What do people who have tried to do that say?
Could we have a survey of informed opinion, even if it's anonymous?
